Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
I just did a T56 swap and its rattling in neutral. When I push the clutch in all the way, it goes away though, but it has to be completly disengaged. Any ideas what it is? Its a new SLP PP and clutch disk if that makes a difference with a summit pilot bearing.
Re: Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
I would be very interested to see how people answer this questions.. I have a WC T-5 that is doing EXACTLY the same thing.. i very slight "chunking" in neutral but only when the pedal is out.. I truely dont know the best way to discribe it, kinda like there is something bouncing around in there.. I basically decided the tranny is on its way out and have been tranny shopping.. but since two people have the exact same problem but two different trannies it may be a common problem that isnt too hard to fix.. definatly not trying to take your thread but at least now the guys know there are two people awaiting a good answer..
good luck with your tranny bro

My T56 did that same thing and I was told that it was that throwout bearing going bad.
Never replaced it before my clutch went out. (Mind you the clutch went out about 2 years later.)
Don't know if this is right or not because I never got a chance to fix it.
Maybe someone else can help.

Mine has the same problem. I've been told that the rattling comes from the throwout bearing, and it's in the design of the clutch...no real fix for it. My clutch is 20k old and I put in a new throwout bearing with it, and it's done it for quite awhile...but I drive around with my stereo on so it has quite possibly been going on since day one.
Re: Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
When I got my car, I wrote BorgWarner about the idle neutral noise.
They called the sound a "Rattle Burst". The unloaded gears vibrate against each other and make the sound.
The light ATF oil makes this noise worse than in old tranmissions.
Nothing can be done, heavy gear lube will make the trans hard to shift.
A really bad throwout bearing or any bearing in the trans could do the same thing, but I wanted you to know that there was another possible cause.
I wouldn't mess with the trans unless the noise is driving you crazy.

Re: Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
I just did the A4 M6 swap with a rebuilt M6. Mine sounds like a can with marbles rolling around in it at idle with the clutch out. I've driven heavy duty trucks that sound about the same, so I don't worry about it. The clutch PP and to bearing are a brand new, and if the to bearing were bad it would make most noise when the clutch is depressed and the bearing is loaded.
Re: Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
messing with it i noticed mine is doing something else also.. check your M6 and see if yours is doing the same thing.. I was driving and passed a mudstain, he threw a rev so I returned.. usually I throw it in Neutral and rev but this time I just pressed the clutch in, it was in 4th at the time.. when i rev'ed it made a horrible noise.. imagine a toy car with the plastic wheels, if you spin them real hard one time they either spin freely and go along time before stopping or vibrate like crazy and make a grinding noise and stop rolling pretty quickly.. if any of you had hotwheels as a kid you know what i mean (holding car in air spinning tires with finger).. thats the best way i know how to discribe it, it makes that sound, it virbrates threw my shifter, and its kind of grinding sound?? input shaft bearing??
Re: Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
Mine was doing the same thing. I replaced the TO bearing which was junk and the pp. The noise is still there, but not nearly as prominent. The trans is rebuilt by a reputable shop, so I'm not concerned about that.

Same thing for me, im going to put in a new TO and pilot bearing with the clutch swap. You can hear mine loud from outside the car too, sounds like the motor is knocking from far away. Guess its common so im not going to worry anymore.

Re: Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
I have the same problem too. Before I swapped clutches last summer I had a pilot pushing in the end of the crank and it never made a noise. I was going to replace it with another bushing but my GM dealer ordered the wrong one and I ended up using the one SPEC sent me. Well ever since I installed it I have that damn rattling going on.
So I would have to say if you got a pilot bearing and not a bushing, thats the culprit.

Re: Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
Well, there is no easy answer.
1. Alot of pilot bearings just plain make the noise. Or a worn pilot bushing will do it. Either way its not a big deal until it really starts to whine and rattle heavily.
2. Release bearing will sometimes do it as well but usually more often then just idling. Same thing.
3. Some of the newer transmissions running ATF just do it. In cooler temperatures, the noise will be gone until its run for a bit.
Sooo..... It could be the pilot bearing you used, it could be the release bearing if you didn't check or change it, or it could just be the trans.
Wow, that was helpful wasn't it!

Re: Rattling noise in neutral, in an M6
My car was fine. Then the clutch started slipping (but still fine with regard to rattling). After a new LT4 clutch and SLP light weight flywheel was installed it now rattles. Dam its kind of annoying! After doing a little digging I found that this is a somewhat common problem with no definite cure.
