quik help identifying my rear end

quik help identifying my rear end

i just wnet outside and got some number off of my rear diff i got 28041414 the last 14 the 1 was half gone so im not sure what else it could be. but i was wondering if anyone knew what this number meant. im trying to indentify what rear end i have so i can get new gears for my car. i have a 1997 pontiac T/A with a m-6 6 speed trans. any replies/advice would be appreciated

Look in the glove box for the sticker with all the different codes. If you have a GU6 on that sticker you have a 3.42 rear end Gu5 I believe is a 3.23.

i do not have the numbers in my glove box. i see a patch where a sticker could be but there is nothing their, is there anyhere else? i read that they could be in the trunk and i looked but i dont see anything around the spear tire or underneath the mat. i cant believe its this hard to firgure out my gear ratio .

Try your driver side door, sometimes the codes are there near the latch mechanism.

Well, if it's a 6-speed car, then there's really no question.....you've got 3.42's! They're on a 3-series carrier, so when you're ordering new gears (4.10's, I'm guessing??) then be sure to order for a 3-series carrier.

The only thing that I'm not sure how to identify without pulling the cover, is whether you've got an Auburn, or a Torsen diff? My guess is you've got the Auburn, since that's what was in my friend's '96 LT1 car, and I think that the Torsens were used more in the newer LS1 models.
