Smile Quiet Gear Set Up in Moser 12 Bolt

Finally, after 4 years, gears in my Moser 12 Bolt are quiet. Had Motive gears (3:73 ratio) installed by David Tau, Winged Wheel Garage, 5758 N. Blue Angel Parkway, Pensacola, FL 32526-1640, 850-457-7696.

Previous installs were not that bad but still had whining/howling from 55 to 65 mph in 5th and 6th gear.

Now, no noise in the first four gears with a very faint howling in the 5th and
6th gears. If I turn on the radio I do not hear any howling at all.

Probably to be expected on my car as I have the SLP torque arm installed. I also have Hotchkiss trailer arms, pan hard rod and polyurethane transmission mount, all items that transmit noise and vibrations.

I highly recommend letting Dave install your gears if you live in the NW Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama or Mississippi.

Mid life toy,
I have been having the same trouble with my moser 12 bolt (4.10). It whines like crazy. I live 15 mins from mosers and I took one of the guys in the shop for a ride. He said a lot of them sound that way and that it is to be expected with a hi performance setup. I think thats BS. I think i have richmonds gears now but I think i will try a set of motives since you had good luck with them. You wouldnt happen to have the exact part number would you?

I do not have the part number but all you need to do is order a set of Motive Gears for the ratio you need or want.

After four installs, I am convinced that the key to having a quiet gear set up is the installer--specifically, how much experience and knowledge the installer has. For example, David Tau who installed my gears installs 2-3 gear set ups a week. On my set he did 5 set ups before he was satisfied the gears would get no quieter. Actually, he set the pinion depth at a different setting than what was indicated on the pinion gear on his 5th try.

I agree with you that Moser gave you a line. Actually, when I bought my 12 Bolt from Moser (Dec 2002) the gears were so loud I could not hear my radio. I complained and Moser gave me a $250.00 refund to have my gears re-installed by a local installer (at that time I lived in Prattville, AL just outside Montgomery). After two more installers and using Motive Gears on the third installer my gears quited down. I went to the last installer after I ran into a Z-28 owner at a local drag strip who recommended David Tau. This Z-28 owner had a Moser 12 Bolt in his 2002 Z and said his gears were noisy until David Tau installed Motive Gears in his Z. True to his word, I know have quiet gears.

Bottomline: Moser has a good product and if you ask them they will recommend Motive Gears if you are more interested in quiet than strength. But you can have quiet gears in a Moser 12 Bolt if the gears are installed properly.

Cheers!

Mid life Toy,
Thanks for your input. Too bad David Tau is clear down in florida. I would definetly pay him to have it done right. How much was the actual labor to have him set it up? This way i can have an idea how much to expect. Thanks.

I paid a total of 613.00 dollars with $240.00 as labor and the rest parts.

Motive Gears - $197.42

Rear End Bearing Kit - $112.02

Gear Fluid - $9.00

Additive (Limited Slip) - $8.11

Shop Supplies - $2.00

Tax - $42.79

Best thing to do is too ask around to find out who has a good reputation for setting up gears. Your local drag strip might be a good start. Also, I called some GM dealer service shops.

Good Luck.

Cheers!
