Quick Q... Relcutor ring removal..

Quick Q... Relcutor ring removal..
Tried searching.. not much on removal.
Some of you may know I have a broken wheel stud. I have to take the axle out. THat dang reluctor ring for the ABS is in the way. Can I just tap it off w/ a brass hammer or something?
What kind of metal is it? (durability to take a hammering)
Pressed on? Shrink fit?
Advise on Axle removal? Just pop the C-clip off the axle through the rear diff, and slide it out?
