questions about tranny

i just recently got my engine together and in the car. I had my 4l60e rebuilt about 6k miles ago b4 my engine rebuild now i have a trans temp gauge in the car now since i put the motor in and i noticed when sitting in traffic the gauge goes up to 240 and higher but if im crusing it slowly goes down. now i dont have any aftermarket trans cooler but i have a 2600 stall converter. tranny shifts fine also. is this normal and will a aftermarket cooler help. i was also told that the stall converter will raise the temp too. Is this true?

Re: questions about tranny

When I put in my converter I was running around 220 driving around in the city. With a supercooler I now run 160 to 180 in the city 150 to 160 highway. Did you use the port on the tranny to plug in the sensor?

Re: questions about tranny

Even a stock trans would benefit from a trans cooler, let alone one with a aftermarket stall. You need to put one on right now, not tomorrow, not this evening, not after lunch, right now!

Re: questions about tranny

Sounds like you bought a crappy converter. I had a crappy 2600 Level 10 9.5" and it ran HOT, my current 2800 Edge runs cooler and drives better.

240 is too hot additional cooling is a good idea, I would recommend a B&M or Tru-Cool (they are made by the same supplier) with the "thermostatic bypass" feature which will help aviod overcooling and help warmup, because random cooling is not a good thing either you want the tranny to be at least 160, automotive fluids are not designed to work at room tempature they need a little heat.

Yeah, I got to say I am very pleased with my Edge converter also.

Re: questions about tranny

It's not technically difficult but it was a PITA to get the zip-ties through the condensor and radiator fins to hold the aftermarket cooler on. You need to splice the cooler into the existing lines to the stock cooler. The B&M cooler I got had pretty good instructions and it took about 1.5hrs. I ran the fluid through the aftermarket cooler first, then through the stock cooler in rad. so the fluid wouldn't over cool.
