Possible serious problem with tranny or rear end....need help
Well here is some background as to what is going on with my car.
About 2 weeks ago i stopped at a friends house to pick him up and i pulled into the parking spot and put the vehicle in park (its an A4). The car was still running but sitting still at idle. My friend got in my car and i put it in reverse to back out and the car didnt start moving like it normally does when i let off the brake, so i gave it a little bit of gas to get it moving. Well when i did that the car jumped/stuttered/jolted. I hit the brakes and put the car into drive so that i could move forward a little to maybe make the gears mesh up or something. I tried to to in reverse again and the car did the same thing but i had to get out of the parking spot so i backed up just enough to have room to clear the parking curb with the car bucking/stuttering the whole way. I then put the car in drive and tried to drive forward and it bucked for about 40 feet then was perfectly normal.
Now, today i was driving and i pulled up to a stoplight waiting to make a left turn. I let off the brake a tad to let the car inch up to trip the sensor and it did a very very mild stutter and you could feel it "thunk" into gear or something i really dont know.
My question to you all is, Is this a tranny or rear end problem and what could it be? My car is a 2000 Camaro Z28 A4 with 18,600 miles on it. I really want to figure out what is wrong before it becomes catastrophic.
I was thinking that if it was the rear end, would a gear swap fix this?
Sorry i was so long winded i just wanted to inform you all.
Thanks in advance,
Fred

Re: Possible serious problem with tranny or rear end....need help
So the problem ended up being my tranny........I got stuck on the side of the road when my tranny decided it didnt want to work anymore. So now its getting rebuilt. Someone please tell me why a tranny with less than 20K miles on will lose its 1st and 2nd gear??????

Sometimes these things happen... Should your tranny have broken? No, of course not, but it would figure that someone's would break at that mileage. Did they tell you exactly what broke on it? I'm thinking something in the controls, especially since it was first and second. I have found GM mechanics to be fairly reliable, but the electronics and controls... If I have to do any more custom work on wiring I might as well get an aftermarket wiring harness.

I have an extended warranty, and the tranny is getting replaced rather than rebuilt....i didnt ask what exactly went wrong but i will when i pick up my car.
