Possible gears....

I talked to my brother-in-law about putting in gears, and he said I should go for it. He had 3:73's in his '94 Z28 and he says they made a big difference.

I just wasn't sure about how much of a difference I'd feel with my engine being stock, because his wasn't when he put the gears in. He had headers, ram air, stuff like that. But he said I should feel a considerably noticeable difference even with my stock engine.

I am hesitant about getting 3:73's, because of the poor gas mileage and the fact that considering I'm stock for the moment, that'd be too much for me. I don't really plan on doing much to the engine, the only things I have in mind for the near future are a CAI, a tune, and some minor stuff like a 160 thermostat, etc etc.....nothing major like a cam or heads. I MAY put some headers in next summer, at the earliest.

My car came stock with 2:73's, so I was thinking maybe to go for 3:23's or 3:42's.......what's your opinions?

1. Are gears worth my money if my engine stays completely stock for awhile?
2. Is it worth it to go for 3:23's or 3:42's?
3. Is there anything else I should be aware of when getting any number gears? Any info would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

Re: Possible gears....

If you have 2.73s now, a change to 3.73s would definitely be noticable. If you are going to change gears, you might as well go all the way and do the 3.73s instead of 3.23s or 3.42s. JMHO though. As for gas mileage, it will decrease some but it will decrease regardless if you constantly have the petal to the floor.

Thanks

I was just wondering if a switch to 3:73's would be stupid because my engine is stock now and I don't plan on doing any MAJOR mods to it. So would I have wasted my money on 3:73's or would it just be a waste to have that high of a gear?

I actually am thinking most seriously about the 3:42's.....

I dont think the gears would be a waste of time. It would i think if you went with just a little more gear. I think gears would really wake up your stock motor think of it as maximizes the power the engine is making right now. It isnt like it will mess it iup cuz its stock.....I plan on getting 3.73's pretty soon.

Yeah I'm really thinkin the same thing....just wanted to see what others had to say about it.

So I guess I wouldn't feel much of a difference going from 2:73's to 3:23's.......the lowest I should go is 3:42? My brother-in-law said that's what his '99 SS came with stock.

Re: Possible gears....

IMHO just go with the 3.73's. I went from 2.73 to 3.23 and then 3.73. Yes it cost a little more for gas but the acceleration difference is well worth it and you won't have to reprogram a second time.

Re: Possible gears....

Unless you have access to a cheap (significantly cheaper than what the install of the 3.73 gears is) 3.42 rear, I would go 3.73.

I have never done a converter change are they really easier than gears? I think gears would be pretty simple. and heard converters are a pain.

If you do it yourself, (and I wouldn't do gears myself) the converter will be easier.

Re: Possible gears....

Probably has to do with the degreeing the gears right?
