Is it possible to break a stock 10 bolt (with TA cover) 4.10 gears on the street using BFG or Nitto 315 Drag Radials tires??? I know you can easily brake it on the track, but since street has less traction. My friend has 380RWHP Camaro, and he is sceptic about purchasing the Drag Radials for his car, because he thinks it will break his 10 bolt. This is his daily driver, and he doesn’t have any $$ to buy 12 bolt...So for now he will have to deal with his stock 10 bolt. What o you guys think??? He doesn’t do Drag Racing on the track. Just some occasional 3500RPMS lunches on the street...

Its always possible that if he hooked it up on the street that it could break but I see that as very unlikely. Anything can happen though.

 

I told him the same, if he will hook up preety good with 4000RPM's or more, his 10 but will hold it only couple of times. I guess the TA cover may help a little, but who knows...

I did it to mine with 275 Nitto DRs...

Running 4.10s on a fresh rebuild (Just over the 1K break in) with T/A studs, and Cover...

Snapped 1 axle clean in half, and destroyed the gears and posi unit.

It was 75* outside and I had just done a nice burnout before racing a buddy of mine down a country road.. the road was hot, the tires were sticky, and the tires hooked, and the weakest link broke..

No more for me... Strange 12 Bolt, Denny's Nitrous Ready DS; the next thing I'll break will be the clutch or tranny...

That was with a SLP clutch, and maybe 350fwhp... it doesn't take much more than sticky tires and hooking up to snap the stocker.

One of the guys I hang out with a lot snapped his '02 WS6 TAs rearend when the car was 2 weeks old; no mods except for drag radials. Hooked it going down the track for the 2nd time ever, did just about the same damage that mine did when it broke; Gears, Diff, and an axleshaft. He somehow got his replaced under warrenty; I wasn't so lucky... but $3K later in parts, and I good for a while on drivetrain mods.

 

I pulled out of a gas station at 1/2 throttle and lost 4 teeth off the ring gear on a 1-2 shift. With the Nitto 315s. It chirped 'em pretty good, about 80* out. The noise it made after chirping them pretty much sucked . . .

Yep, TransGo shift kit on middle 'Street/Strip' shift setting install. Dyno'd at 255hp @ 5114rpm before headers/orp/cutout and Comp springs & 1.6:1 ProMags. Above mods + Nitto DRs dropped my previous best ET .7 sec.

 

Turned my posi unit into chunks and pieces with stock clutch, crappy 16 street tires, and stock car other than cat-back and CAI on a chip and seal road. Anything is possible. I would say bye bye to that 10 bolt.

 

I told him everything, and he will use stock 10 bolt for now, and when it blows, he wil rebuild it with some better parts (as in the guide to improve 10 bolt). New 10 bolt shuld be good for about 400HP...

I have broken 4 10 bolts so far, and have finally decided to get a 12 bolt. Please learn from my mistakes.

 

on a 6 spd, it'll probably break. A4, probably not. bfg drags hook almost as well as M/T ET streets in the appropriate size.
i don't see how you snapped the axle right in half on a 7.5" 10 bolt without something else going seriously wrong to cause it. f-body 10 bolt 28 spline axles are said by most to be good for 10 second times...it's just the rest of it that makes it weak. therfore, 380fwhp would not even get cose to breaking it.

 

Any details??? Did you rebuild the old one??? I did huge search on the web, and “supposedly” changing to stronger 28 spiline axles, strong aburn/torsen diff, solid bearing spacer, aluminium rear end girdle and some other stuff will make a 10 bolt safe for 400HP (especially for street driving)..
