For a few months now, my transmission has had only 1st and 3rd gear. It is an a4, and my car is a 94 z28. I took it to my neighbor who owns his own mechanic shop, and he replaced the shift solenoids. He does not deal with transmissions much, so he sent me to a transmissioin shop. The guy there replaced all the wiring and all the solenoids. It worked for a little bit, but did the same thing after like 2 days. I have taken it back several times, and it still is not fixed. Does anyone know what is wrong with my tranny? Also, should I just get it rebuilt (performance parts of course)?

 

I just installed a shift kit in my A4 and learned a few things that might help.

There is an Actuator on the passanger side of the trans that controls the band lock up for 2nd and 4th gear. It is approx. 4" Round and is held in by a snap ring. Easy to get to since you don't have to pulle the trans or the pan.

When I installed the shift kit, it mentioned that normal wear might warrant an additional shim to keep the band in correct tolorances with the drum. If your trans has enough wear, it could be as easy as installing a second shim, allowing the band to grab the drum once again.

These transmissions are pretty tricky though, you might want to take it to a reputable shop to have it looked at.
