Re: Not too happy with spec right now...

the scat guys keep insisting that these problems are due to failure of putting in a new pilot bushing when the clutch was installed. he also tells me of improper alignment and all that other bull. Sure it sounds logical, but how come nobody is having problems with many other clutches when their cars were setup and the clutches were installed properly like any other person?? I've never once heard of any coinsidence soo strong that 20 spec customers replied to the post that their specs have also had this problem. and thats only on this site. like many said, it's luck whether it lasts or not, but nobody want to take the 500 nonrefunable dollar chance.

Re: Not too happy with spec right now...

several years ago i went through several of the stage 3 ceramic discs, this was the "baddest" clutch they made at the time.... they kept coming apart during full throttle shifts.

they said i had too much input shaft play or a bad pilot bearing. pilot bearing was new with each install and input shaft play didn't seem excessive.

the last time it came apart, it managed to crack my bellhousing and cut open my oil pan.

i bought a street twin, had it balanced, and havent looked back since.

i just wish i would have bought a street twin in the first place. i would have saved a LOT of money.

Agreed! I had a Spec stage 3 in the vette 12,000miles later? same thing a cracked clutch disc and loose springs. do the twin you wont be disapointed, It's the almighty god of clutches just be ready to replace everything behind the clutch.

street twins are great, but we need an alternative that is much less expensive. for guys like me, buying a thousand dollar clutch assy is not an option. i can probably afford 500, but even that is making me limit my spending completely. i just want something that will hold and last a long time. imight try and south bend clutch. they have dxd or whatever. i've heard those were good, ?

NEWEST INFO FROM SPEC VIA EMAIL...HE WRITES...

"Also, I think part of the issue is we sell 700 LT1 units a month. If, over the last 2 mos, 5 guys have a problem, and for kicks let’s say it’s the product and not the install or alignment, that’s less than 3 tenths of one percent defect rate. That’s the best in the industry."

I'M ALMOST GOING TO GET SUCKERED INTO BUYING ONE OF THESE THINGS...

Man, don't do it! Save up, rob a bank, do whatever it takes and get the Street Twin!!! lol

I had 2 different Spec clutches ever since I pulled out my stock clutch 2 years ago, and the car has been shaky as hell taking off the whole time. The Spec clutches were very smooth when shifting into other gears, but taking off slowly in 1st was tough to not shake the car to death. Yes, both of the clutches from Spec ended up being defective (maybe second time was due to misalignment or whatever, since my pilot bushing was worn out when the broken clutch came out, but it was a new pilot bushing that was installed with a new crank, Spec flywheel, and Spec clutch), but even when they were new and working correctly, it was shaky on slow take-offs.

I just installed the Mcleod about 100 miles ago and holy crap it is the nicest clutch I've ever felt! I'm still in the break-in period, so I don't know it's full potential yet, but it is definitely smooth as butter taking off or backing out of the driveway! After 2 years of shaky Spec clutches, I didn't even think it was possible to take off smooth with a clutch that could hold 400+ horsepower. But if you accidentally let out the McLeod too fast, it instantly grabs and goes, jerking you back in the seat, it's such a nice feeling I wish I could explain it better, but trust me, it's well worth the investment, especially if you get any other clutch that fails on you and requires replacement even one time. Not to mention that the McLeod kit includes the billet flywheel and adjustable master cylinder, making the price not much more than a Spec.
