Is this normal for ring and pinion's? PICS!

Well I finally broke down and decided to change the fluid in my 9", seeing how it is still running on the fluid that I broke it in on (about 5K miles ago... I know, bad me). So in the parking lot of my apt complex, I dropped my rear end and took the third member out, with a couple of friends. The second I popped my third member out, my buddy saw the ring gear, and siad "WTF?! YOU ACTUALLY GOT YOUR RING AND PINION MIKRONITED?! (sp?)" This was because the ring and pinion was all shiney and what not. Even the outside, where the ring gear does not have contact with anything. Here's the wierd part... I didn't have the ring and gear mikronited. When I first put it in, it was a dull color, just like every other ring and pinion I have put in. We checked the gear pattern, because I broke my yoke not too long ago and I put a new one in without checking the pinion depth. Gear pattern was perfect still.

The gear oil that came out smelt very burnt. you know, the infamous rotten egg smell. it was also very discolored and metal shavings.

I know the shavings are normal, since it was the break in fluid. but why is my ring gear and pinion shiney now? Is it possible that the shop I purchsed my rear end from had it mikronited (and decided not to advertise it) and had it coated?
