Need some help with a noisy T56
Need some help with a noisy T56
I did a search which turned up a lot of information relating to the problem I am having but nothing definitive so I wanted to get some more opinons on the subject.
The problem started a few weeks ago right after I had a coil wire fail,I don't know if it is related but the timing sure is funny.I was driving the car when the coil wire started failing which loaded and unloaded the drivetrain several times, criusing not full throttle, and after I fixed the coil problem I noticed a whining/growling noise in all forward gears when the transmission is under load.Pushing the clutch in and coasting will make the noise go away.Coasting with the clutch pedal out results in the noise still being there.
This leads me to believe that maybe it is the pilot bushing or input shaft bearing.
Here are a few more clues.
1.Noise not there at idle, clutch in or out.
2.Transmission shifts good.
3.Clutch seems ok.
4.Cannot feel any abnormal vibrations in the clutch pedal or shifter.
5.Fluid was changed about two years ago with DexronIII.
6.Noise was not there before the coil wire failed.
7.Car is a 94 with 123k/well maintained.
8.Not the original clutch/changed before I got the car.Unknown mileage.
I know it's hard to diagnose these things over the net.Maybe someone else had a similiar problem in the past and can help steer me in the right direction.
The car has been hitting my wallet hard lately and really can't afford a tranny overhaul right now. Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: Need some help with a noisy T56
My 98 does the same thing. I was told by t-56 rebuilds that it's caused by excessive lash in the gears due to the mileage. They said as long as the shifting isn't effected, there's nothing actually wrong with the trans. They did recommend I switch to GM syncromesh fluid, however.

1.I can now hear the noise at initial start up with the clutch pedal depressed. To me it sounds like a bad bearing(throwout or input shaft?).What parts are spinning with the clutch pedal depressed?
2.While driving I can really hear it loudly through the console area while accelerating, cruising seems to lessen the noise.
If I can hear this at initial startup with the clutch pedal depressed would this mean that my problem is in the clutch area since the transmission itself is not rotating? Please excuse my ignorance on this subject.I've never had the opportunity to work on a manual transmission.
Thanks for any and all the help you can give me.
