Need info on clutch line mod

I tried a search on it but came up empty, does anyone here have details on how to remove the line restriction from the hydralic clutch line which allows full range of motion of the clutch?

The restriction is in the upper end of the line, at the end that attaches to the master cylinder. On the original line in your '97 it is about an inch down from the end of the line. On a new replacement line, it is external at the end of the fitting. Of course you have to remove the line from the car to do this.

When I did mine, I drilled it out with a 1/8" bit. To keep chips from getting into the line, I clamped the end of the line in a vise, inverted so that the chips would fall out (instead of in) the line. I also rigged up a piece of hose to my air compressor at the other end of the line, regulated the air pressure down to a few psi and that way the air flow would also blow out any chips that might enter ahead of the drill bit. Use a stop on the drill bit so you don't accidentally go too far when you drill through the restriction and end up damaging the inner liner of the braided line.

What does this mod do for you?

Re: Need info on clutch line mod

Thanks cehan I just brought a new setup, I'm putting a TKO 600 in my Monte Carlo SS with the hydralic clutch setup from a 3rd gen f-body.

Coop1 this mod allows the slave to extend fully, GM put this restriction in the line to keep the clutch from fully disengaging to prevent people from being able to power shifting 4th gens cleanly. How many times have you tried to power shift only to have the trans grind going into gear and eventually breaking the trans.

Actually what the restriction does is to dampen the "hit" when you release the clutch pedal and thereby reduce shock to the drivetrain. The restriction slows down the fluid as it refills the master cylinder between shifts, so when you try to shift too quickly between gear changes the master cylinder hasn't had time to refill completely from the previous shift and you won't get full slave cylinder travel to disengage the clutch from the pressure plate and flywheel.

I was really surprised to see how small the restriction is, when I bought the new GM master/slave cylinder. The new braided line has the restrictor at the outer end of the fitting. I didn't measure it, but it was about the diameter of a paper clip.
