Exclamation Need help to figure out what wrong with rear

Here's the story. I got a rear end from a friend of mine that already had a set of Richmond 4.10's in it. It only had a very slight wine to it when I got it. I eventually got a set of 275/40/17 Nitto drags for the back and ran it at the drag strip a few nights. I noticed the wine was starting to get louder. One night I backed over something and it bent my exhaust bracket up and it pushed my drivetrain up about a inch and a half. I drove it for two days before I noticed this. Next thing I hear is a clunking noise that sounded like a very high piched wine once I got up to speed. My dad and I put in on jackstands and took the driveshaft loose and turned the wheels and you could hear the clunking coming from the rearend.

I figured I chipped a tooth in the rearend and have bought a new set of gears and dropped it off at a shop yesterday to get the gears installed. The guy doing my gears called me today and told me that everything inside the rearend looked fine, no broken teeth or cracked teethand all the bearings looked good.

Does anybody know what the noise could have been and do you think that putting in the new gears will fix it?

Re: Need help to figure out what wrong with rear

A lot of your aftermarket gears can be slightly over or undersized compared to the original ones, and the gears need to have a fairly strict clearance in order to lubricate and work properly. Too close and oil won't fit between them and they'll wear much faster. Too far apart and they'll slide against each other and wear much faster. Just make sure you let your mechanic know about the previous problems you've had so he knows it may not have been adjusted properly.- Not saying it wasn't since 4.10s are kind of whiny anyway, but something to check & it doesn't take long.
