Need help with axle issue!
I am helping a friend out who doesn't know much about cars, and I don't know much about newer camaros. He has a 97 camaro Z28, 5.7, 5 speed, he just relaized his rear axle is rusting through and it is too unsafe to drive, so he wants to sell it.
Does anyone know what rear axle is in his camaro and if there is others that he can interchange. Also is there anyone who is selling one or knows where to get one.
He just bought the car about 3 months ago and I don't want to see him sell it, so if I can find a rear axle I can but it in and get the car back on the road.

Uhm... something doesn't sound right...
97 Camaro with the 5.7 never came with a 5-speed; it is a 6-speed.
I've NEVER EVER EVER heard of a rear-axle rusting out... are you sure the axle itself is rusting out because I highly doubt it. I've pulled axles out of vehicles 10X older and they are still solid as a rock.
Any rear axle out of a similar f-body can be installed; just make sure the TCS and ABS are the same (Has or doesn't have TCS, and is a 3ch or 4ch ABS system). They can be had for like $150 if that.

Happens up in Canada with their aggresive road salts more frequently.
Yes it is a 6 speed, sorry I'm used to saying 5 speed. And yes it is the axle housing i couldn't think of what it has called for some reason, so i thought you guys would understand what i ment by axle.
Thanks for all your guys help so far, but from what i was told there was a special axle housing used in the 97 because of the 30th annivesery of the camaro, I'm not sure I don't know much about camaros I'm a Jeep guy just tring to help my friend.

You first need to find out if it is three channel (no traction control) or 4 channel (has TCS).
Then cruise the for sale sections of the boards for a matching complete unit and swap out the whole thing. Or if you're good with the wrenches just a housing and swap in his internals.
