Need help with 9" Ford... Pics anyone?

Alright, bought this 9", ordered a center section, as far as I know, I have to install the center section, the seals, bearings and axles and c clips and bolt it in. I have all the parts needed (I think), I have a general idea how most of it goes intogether. Here are pics of what I have. I think I install the seal into the housing ends, press it in there all the way, then i believe there is a ball bearing that gets pressed into the housing end but not sure exactly where this other bearing goes, looks like just a solid bearing. Also do the bearings get pressed onto the axles? Bearing doesnt go all the way down the axle freely.

the wheel bearing, some kind of solid bearing and the seal

more pics

see how my bearing doesnt go all the way down, does it need to be pressed?

Damn. I was looking at a thread not more than 5 minutes ago about this here http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=648943 . I want to do the same thing as you; get the housing/axle package and toss in a center section. Hope that helps. Let us know how it goes. BTW, where did you get the housing/axle setup and how much $$?

What keeps the axle from sliding out of the rear end, unless I am missing something here it appears that the only thing securing the axle is the tight interference fit of the bearing with the retainer holding that bearing in.

Is this right?

yes.

Are you going to reuse the factory brakes?

the brake caliper bracket for each side goes on first....then the beaqring, then a axle retainer ring...this will all need to be pressed on the correct way on the correct side on the correct axle.....

Then the axle just slide in and the 4 t-bolts go throught the caliper bracket and the nuts hold the axle in...you may need to shim the caliper with washers.

And there is no chance of the axle sliding out of the interferance fit bearing at all under normal conditions or race conditions? Now I understand why they went to the C-clip.

clips are step backwards...most sanctioning bodies make you run C-clip elinimnators.....when the axle breaks(closer to the splines) it is still retained...so the whole wheel does not slide out.

wrd....you have to understand this ring you press on hase to be done in a press and tons of pressure to put it on or take it off.....Pretty much no chance of it coming off. Even with bearing splitter etc. and trying to press them back off most people nomally still have to cut them off b/c the fit is so tight.

Press fit is alot better than c-clips.....also where the c-clip goes is the smallest part of the axle/weakest

one other thing.....how would you put c-clips in a 9" ford rear

the c-clips would go on the housing ends but as mentioned this rear doesnt use c clips. The bearings press on very very tightly. THanks for the info, very much needed. Just dont know if I have the correct size axles, are they suppose to be really close.

No, I am not proposing this. I am simply trying to get an understanding of how the 9" works cause my Midwest fabbed 9" will be here this week.

So referring to this:
http://www.mustangii.org/decoder/axle/rem-axl-large.jpg
The bearing and the retainer ring are both a tight fit on the axle.

I have a 20 ton hydro press with two base plates with 4 types of slots each, is this all I need to press these bearings and rings on?
