NEED HELP!! 700r4 overheated and wont shift!!
NEED HELP!! 700r4 overheated and wont shift!!
Well it shifts into 2nd very very sloppily wont shift to 3rd or 4th and takes 2 seconds to go into reverse and slips horribly if i try to accelerate .
Here's was happened, my dogs got out and i was freakin out driving around the negiborhood and forgot the turn my fans on (manual only switch) and while the truck was sitting at idle for about 10 mins, the motor got to about 220 and the overflow cap started spewing coolant, and i assume the trans got hot as well since the fan was off. Well i flip the fan on, and get the temp down to about 200 and drive it slowly to get the temp down until it was 180. Didn't think anything else of it. Well i drove about 3 mins to the store, let it cool for about 15 mins, then drive another 2 mins and thats when i just started to notice it shifted just a little soft, and then i parked at school. hour and half later, drove about 10 mins and then it really started to run like crap. Shifting very soft into second and took it while to shift into 3rd, then it wouldn't even shift into third, and you couldn't even feel the 1-2 shift it was so soft. So i drove it about 5 mins to a safe place and parked it. I also checked the fluid while it was running and its full, but the fluid was just barely warm to the touch. Not hot like i'd expect.
WTF happened to my tranny?? If a trans overheats, what goes out? Could it be a seal on a pump thats busted from heat?? I drove it for maybe 10-15 miles after it over heated. Help some one please. I'm taking it to a trans shop tommorow morning as well.

Re: NEED HELP!! 700r4 overheated and wont shift!!
well, the transmission will not overheat from the water temperature overheating. besides, 220* is not overheating, and is still doable for a motor. the transmission has it's own coolant which is the transmission fluid. obviously, transmission fluid will not get hot sitting still in park because it's not making as much friction sitting as it is when driving. to overheat a trans it would take a lot of heavy duty towing, plowing, or flat out beating on it for a long period of time. this is all figuring that it has a lack of cooling needed while doing those things. I'm not sure what your problem is, but sometimes if the engine faults and doesn't run as expected, the transmission will shift very radomly and badly. the 700r4 is not run off of a computer, so the trans is trying to shift because it thinks it's supposed to, all because of the engine running roughly. i'm not sure excactly, but i'd eliminate the possibility of you overheating the trans.
Re: NEED HELP!! 700r4 overheated and wont shift!!
well the motor seems to be running just fine now. Someone else suggested maybe something is up with the tv cable assembly or something. I dont know. I'm just really worried. I dont have the money to fix this right now and the tranny and converter only have 4k miles on it. And it's a built trans too. Supposed to handle 675 hp, and i've got 450 at MAX.
Re: NEED HELP!! 700r4 overheated and wont shift!!
well i ust got back from the trans shop, and the guy didn't really tell me ****. He was a ****ing asshle saying "Oh wel you didn't tell me it was a pro stocker. I guess i can't really beleive anything else you tell me since you weren't being completly honest". I mena WTF. I didn't think that my motor would anything to do with my trans going out while i was just normally driving around.
I did call the company i bought it from but they're in FL. All they could really tell me was how fluid stops going to the 3-4 clutch pack 1st, then the 1-2, which kinda sounds like whats happening. Over all shifts get weak, then no 3-4 shift, then no 2-3, and then crazy sloppy 1-2. But i dont know hwo a 700r4 actually routes the fluid and how it could losing pressure. It seems like whne the fluid gets warm, its gets thinner, and wont hold pressure right. that being combined with a weak pump seal soemwhere?? i dont know..they also said it realy need sto be torn down to see what it is...
Oh ****.. i just remembered. The day before i had gotten on it while everything was kinda cold. I was at work for about 2.5 hrs and when i left, i did a little fishin in the parking lot. You think that could have blown something that i didn't notice til the next day??. But what is it?!?!?!?! damnit this sucks. And i dont have the money to buy a new trans.
