Need a 4L60-E, told only a '94 will work
The tranny in my 94 is gone and I need a new one. I've been told by many mechanics I can only use a 94. Is this right? I thought all 4L60-E's were the same from 94 and up?
I had the same issues with my 94 Z28, you can only use a 94 Tranny that is correct. I Found mine off the for sale section of this board, they are out there you just gotta look for em. Simple answer yes only a 94 will work.
The 94 tranny has just one lock up solenoid for the TCC. It applys the lock up directly, making it feel like another gear change. The 95-up has this same solenoid and another one right beside it called the Pulse Width Modulation solenoid. This solenoid "vibrates" the pressure to the TC clutch kinda like ABS works for brakes (which allows the 95-up to have a smooth TCC engagement unlike the pre-95 trannies). Transgo's shift kit for the 95-up has a part that disables the PWM solenoid. I think you can use the 95-up trannies in the 94 just by disableing this solenoid. You might even be able to get one of the programmers on this board to program it out and not have to worry about dropping the pan to install that part (unless, of course, you want to install a shift kit). Ion Solton (MadZ28 on this board) would be the first person i'd ask about the programming thing.
I ran a built 96 4l60e (in place of the origional 94 trans)in my car for most of last summer with no problems. the only differaces I know of are the extra wire for pulse width modulation and a differant speed sensor. I just didn't bother with wire for the pulse width. I didn't have any problems in about 6k miles. I then switched to a t56.
Hope this helps.

So which is it? If I run a 95+ tranny I will have to disable the extra solenoid and program out the difference? Or will I have to do anything? No 94's are available in my area so it's kinda important. Thanks for any help

As you can probably see by looking back over a few days, a lot of people forget/don't realize there are a lot of new specific forums now.
