My speedometer's not reading right?

What would make my speedo not read right? When my car is in neutral and I rev it up, it goes up as well. It's also making a weird noise but i can't tell if it's the tranny or what. It's a 95 Z28 6-speed. Thanks for any advice you guys could give me.

well i own a 3rdgen so my problem may be different than yours. but maybe the speedo cable has been 'kinked'.

on my car the prev. owner had edelbrock headers installed, and the guy who did it kinked the cable...so now my speedo reads 10mph higher that wat i am actually driving.

maybe get someone to check the speedo cable.
