Missed Shifts
Missed Shifts
When I heard people say they 'missed 3rd' is missing a gear like 3rd associated w/ missing it and hitting first or fifth, or do they mean they went to hit 3rd...had the clutch timing off and it wouldn't go into 3rd? Or do they mean they hit the tiny spot in between 1st and 3rd and 3rd and 5th and never got it out of the neutral zone?
I imagine its pretty hard on a motor to miss gears...assuming you are shifting so fast that once you miss you dont really know it yet and you already have your foot to the floor..over revving the **** out of the motor.
I may have a clutch hyd issue again but it seems like all 3 times I've missed 3rd It doesnt seem to go into 1st because I would def notice that...its a good distance away in the corner, but I hit something which makes the car jolt pretty damn hard almost feels like the rear tires locked up, and then either I poped the clutch or it pushes out of gear back into neutral..its real hard to tell how high it revs because the car shakes so damn bad at that point and it all happens to fast.
Any help?

Dang that doesnt sound good...hard on everything to miss a gear. Guy was coming out to race me the other day in an LSx car...missed a gear on the sauce and dropped a valve...yes another one bites the dust
Not sure about the shaking...got to be the trans reacting badly I would think but not sure. When folks miss gears its typically the miss it and over rev it like you said...dont hit it on the first try so they try and stab it again. Best way to prevent this is to let out of the gas when you shift...some guys powershift and that can be dangerous especially if its a daily car. my .02

I dont know how my car has survived one real bad 3rd gear miss I had a while ago. I hit 1st when I first got the car, and it reved to near 7k..Somehow it still runs like a champ..knock on wood. Perhaps the fact it had 30k on it helped...fresher valve springs?
On a side note, would having really nice valve springs on a stock motor significantly reduce your risk of dropping a valve during a missed shift? I assume most of the time a dropped valve is caused by valve spring float at such a high rpm the motor is not suppose to see.

Don't know exactly what the issue is, but mine does the same thing, i was told by alot of people, its not me, i asked about this a week ago "Drill Mod" & was told thats only on LS1 cars, not LT1s, but some have told me different, mine just goes to 'N" & stops, i don't power shift (i let off), but when your shifting fast, your instinct is to let out the clutch & proceed too the floor, i have a rev. limiter on mine ( i thought the factory cars had them too), mine is set at 6200, i missed 3rd. 3 times already (at the track), it sucks, especially when your on a good run.
I don'y know what the deal is, but i was told here its the "shiftt fork" in the tranny, others on another board (& here too) say all you need is the "Drill mod", i was told what needs to be done, but i'm still not understanding it (i'm slow, i need pix & step by step instructions lol)
Ok, a guy that sent me a PM about this says, its the line off the MC for the clutch that goes to the Slave cylinder, if this makes sence.

In your case, i'll bet you have air in the lines or slave, but if its 'Kicking" out of gear, you may have internal issues, maybe a bad syncro, but i'm no tranny expert, mine just sounds like a "sewing machine" when i miss, still pisses me off though.
Its really not hard bleeding them (just like your brakes) but you need 2 people, fill the resivour, pump the clutch beedle 4-5 times (to the floor), then hold it at the floor, crack the bleeder on the slave, proceed doing this untill there is no more air (keeping the resivour full or not letting it go dry), this should take care of that issue, then see if it still shifts funky (making shure the clutch feels good), if so, then its in the tranny.
No it doesn't jerk out of gear or anything harsh, it just stops in "N" & won't continue into 3rd., i've heard from several this is a common problem for the M6, under normal & somewhat hard shifting its fine, shifts great, it does it i'de say 40% of the time when i'm racing it shifting above 5500 rpms, it could be me but i don't think it is, so now, i just take alittle extra time in the 2nd to 3rd. gear shift & MAKE SURE its in before i proceed, i'm going with some 3.89 gears soon, that'll make things really interesting lol.
