mcleod vs slp clutch question
mcleod vs slp clutch question
my car currently has the mcleod clutch and pp, i believe its just the normal old mcleod. the guy that i bought the car from gave me a brand new slp clutch and pp with the car. i guess my question is, how much stronger is the mcleod than the slp? to my understanding, the slp doesnt chatter, mine right now does, i have gotten used to it, but if they both hold the same amount of power why not have a smooth clutch? especially for free.
to sum it up, how much power could each clutch safely hold?
thanks

All of the pressure plates are the same clamping force, due to a Valeo patent on the design. The SLP pressure plate is lightened, but doesn't really offer anything over the McLeod pressure plate, which (like everything except SLP) is just a painted Valeo. So the ultimate limiting factor is the clamp force of the pressure plate. Although, the materials in the discs do add quite a bit of strength. The McLeod disc uses one side organic, one side ceramic, which is stronger than the organic/organic SLP disc, which is basically a stock Valeo disc. So to answer you question, your McLeod is stronger, and the chatter is do to the half-ceramic friction material (which also adds to the durability of the disc). Once you start slipping the McLeod, you could use the SLP until you got a Street Twin. But that McLeod should be good til 450 hp.
I've been using the SLP clutch for about 10k miles now and have made over 50 hard passes with it at the track with drag radials running into the low 12's last time out. I'm looking to replace just the disc right now with the Mcleod single disc, I hear it grabs better than the SLP and is a stronger disc. From what I've heard and could tell when I installed it the SLP disc it is just a stock LT1 disc, it does use an LT4 PP though which has been lightened. The SLP does grab better than stock but not that much and it is pretty smooth. Well mine was smooth up until about the 40th pass or so, now the clutch seems to drag between shifts a little. I think the disc is probably getting a little glazed or warped (or both)
