Manual vs Auto...yes another one....

I have searched this! I want somemore input. I was reading the section on LS1tech.com and it has scared me a little. An LS1 is the next car I want to buy, and I am a little scared after reading about the M6 and A4. A 6 speed it what I want, but after seeing some of the prices on performance clutches wow....and I was thinking of the A4 because it suits my driving a little better cause its a lot of stop and go driving. So my question is what is your opinion on stick and auto?

here is the link ... scroll half way down to part II drivetrain.

http://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361959

Thank you!

well I am going to kinda answer my own question, I read a little more on the sticky posted in my last post. Basically you can get a decent clutch (Sintered Iron Disk), which will run me appx 400 bucks not installed. A rear end (9" Posi-Traction). Which my buddy said it will run me around 200-500 bucks depending on condition, (used obviously).

Any input would be great!!!

m6
Pro's
Less drivetrain loss
more gear ratio's to choose from both wich make better MPG and a slightly faster car" Assuiming you can drive the m6"
less weight
stronger from the factory
Fun to drive
Cons:
Margin of error" Driver"
constant shifting
Auto: pro's:
Easier to drive in the city
consistant quarter mile times
Also if you make your car blistering fast the M6 could slow you down due to the fact the auto will never make a mistake and you will. Once you start running 12's it gets hard to keep up with.
Cons:
Less HP to the ground
more weight
Not as fun to drive

No matter who you ask its going to boil down to you. What do you want? This is a subjective question that is almost like asking someone what their favorite color is. Its your car so go drive one of each and decide for your self.

Have fun!

Yeah. Alot of people have told me to get what I want to get. I have only driven a Auto 93 Z28, and a Auto WS6. That is F-Body wise....I have driven tons of sticks before but nothing like the LS1 M6, The closest manual I have gotten to that is my buddies Cobra.

+1. I did the T56 swap, and must say I LOVE it! But then I never plan on taking my car to the track, and I wanted the overdrive for all my freeway driving. Kinda miss the simplicity of the auto, just press the gas and it goes, but at least now I feel like I'm actually driving my car. Buy hey, its all on you, like everyone else will say. Its all about fun

I drive my cammed 00 SS w/a M6 daily. Its great! I don't even mind it in stop and go traffic.
Don't sweat clutch prices. If you don't rag on the car you'll be fine. I have over 86k miles and I'm still on the stock LS1 clutch and yes I do race it. I have a LS7 clutch/flywheel setting in my garage waiting to be installed. I got it for under $300 as a very low milage take off from Lingenfelter. Ram HD clutches do well and aren't very expensive IMO. Now once you get into the serious clutches yes, you'll be paying $1000+ for it.

Autos are cool if you are into drag racing. With a looser converter alone, it is very feasible to run .5 sec quicker ET's.

I just prefer grabbing gears to go around curves so I opted for an M6. It all about personal preference.

I have had both a 94 A4, first car, and a 93 M6, current car, and I would never drive an A4 again. Maybe once your car is stupid fast it will slow you down slightly, but if you are going to have an average speed car and want something fun as hell to drive, go 6 speed, all the way.

There is nothing like dumping the clutch and doing a HUGE smoky burnout and then spinning the tires all the way through 3rd!

Stock for stock manauls cars are faster 99% of the time assuming one can drive the car.

Personally like you I prefer the M6.
