M6 Feels Notchy?

Ive noticed lately that 2nd and 3rd gear have been feeling notchy sometimes. Is this something that can be helped with a synthetic fluid, or is this an early indication of worn syncro rings?

Re: M6 Feels Notchy?

When I first got my z28, it felt very notchy until I adjusted my shifting habits...now they slide very smoothly into each gear. I suppose it was just something I was doing, I now clutch it quicker and slide it into gear and it feels like butter.

On a side-note, anyone else with an m6 get a 2nd gear grind if they powershift it hard or granny-shift it hard and fast? If I baby it into 2nd during a race it won't do it, but maybe I'm just slamming it too hard...normal or not?

Re: M6 Feels Notchy?

Man, I've got that exact same problem with my 2nd gear...I can drive the car all day and it's fine and then all of the sudden it'll grind going up or down into 2nd (usually during 'spirited' driving)...

I figure it's a synchro, and that I damaged it with one too many of those 45 MPH clutch drops into 2nd...I think I'll end up getting the tranny rebuilt when I change out the clutch (whenever that wears out). I'd be curious to here waht you find out, though. Is your problem similarly intermitant?

Re: M6 Feels Notchy?

It never grinds going down for me...only on the 1-2 shift. Happens almost every time during a race...sucks having to baby it into gear. I'll probably have it rebuilt over the winter

It has never happened during normal or a 'little' spirited driving.

How many miles do you have on your clutch, this is exactly the symptoms I started seeing when my clutch went out on my 95.

Oh yeah, how much fluid do those things usually take?

Re: M6 Feels Notchy?

Yes it's the synthetic stuff, my old 5.0 shifted really notchy no matter what until I changed out the tranny fluid at 100k. I used the redline d4 ATF also...then it shifted very nicely after a week or so. It takes time to go through the tranny and smoothe things out. I think our cars take about 4 1/2 qts, but I could be wrong.

Re: M6 Feels Notchy?

Ya, a fluid change may help (now that you said it may take a week or so)...I changed the fluid almost a month ago and was very dissappointed to find that I still had my 'problem' that day...I haven't had the issue for the last few weeks, though, so maybe it's gone--I did drive the car really hard this weekend and it was fine. It's intermittant, though, so I can't be sure.

I used regular ATF fluid nothing special.
