LT1 OBD1 versus OBD2 4L60Es
Obviously mechanically they are interchangeable (as in they will bolt up just fine) but what I am wondering is if they are electronically interchangeable? I have a 4L60E that was pulled from my 96 Z28 in favor of a T56 for sale and I have a couple of people interested in buying it but they happen to have 95s which are OBD1... So I am wondering if anybody out there has the final answer on this.
I did a few searches and I found one person saying they are all interchangeable from 94-97 and one other person said there is a reprogram needed in the PCM for it to function properly but otherwise it will work fine.
I'm all ears
.
Thanks in advance for the help,
Matt

Re: LT1 OBD1 versus OBD2 4L60Es
I put a 94 4L60E in my buddies 96 formula.. It works just fine.. The only thing i had to do was switch tail shaft houseing to have the correct VSS for the speedo.. Thats it. The only other things is that his converter doesn't lock up, due to there not being any lock up solenoid for it in the trans.. I believe. I didn't even know about it until he started poping up a code for it. Just haven't pulled the pan yet to see if its there or not.. and weather i can just swap out his old lock up solenoid into his new trans..
Like i said car still runs great, has a 3600 Vig too. Ran 12.7 at the track. .
Hope this helps..

Re: LT1 OBD1 versus OBD2 4L60Es
I did some more research on it and apparentely all you have to do is put the proper TCC solenoid or PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) TC control motor in for the given year of car on top of the VSS issue you mentioned. Other than those things, the transmissions are completely interchangeable (excluding the 93 model year since it is a TH700R4(4L60) and not a 4L60E) for LT1 Fbodies.
Brad - I bet that what is wrong with your buddies ride is that it is a 96 and needs to have a PWM TC motor but it currently has a TCC solenoid in it that came in the 94 model transmission. You should be able to swap it out of the old trans....
The TCC solenoid is essentially an on-off switch that either fully locks or unlocks the torque converter clutch whereas the PWM TC motor can be controlled by the PCM to apply the TCC at variable rates.
On a side note.... the person interested in mine did buy it and it is going into a 95 Trans Am and they told me that they know what needs to be done to make it work....
