LS1 M6 guys inside please!

so my buddy calls me out with an 00 SS auto wanting to race......

I normally don't run my car hard driving it every day but every now and then when i need run my car hard it has held up nicely.....

so we line up and i dump my clutch at just enough rpm to spin the tires over a few times to get the dirt and grit off them like I've done plenty of times before........

except this time when i dump my clutch it revs up slips its *** off and i smell a very strong clutch odor.....

I try a second time thinking maybe i didnt' drop the clutch all the way the first time and I get the same results... a high rev with no tire spin and a strong clutch odor......

I didn't want to back out of the race b/c my friend just bought his ss and has been wanting to run me in it for awhile now and i have too... So launch off the line pretty well but with no tire spin (i always spin out of the hole) so i end up hooking nicely and winning the race by a considerable margin... however now i'm a nervous wreck b/c now i think my clutch is on its last leg. It's never done this or had any symptoms of slip...when i drove home it was fine i got on it just a little bit (dropped into 3rd from 70 mph and patted it) and if felt strong w/ no slip.

Has anyone else had this problem and about how long from this point should i expect my clutch to hold up if i just baby the car??? thanks for the feedback guys

Ya sounds like you have a clutch that is starting to go out. Well all I can say is drive it slow till you get it changed.

what do you guys think of these i found on ebay?

would it be worth the money to go ahead and invest in a stage 2 or 3 clutch?

Re: LS1 M6 guys inside please!

are you planning on putting any more power mods on it?

it would suck to install a stock replacement clutch...do some mods...and find out it still won't hold.

i say go for the heavier clutch.

i changed my clutch by myself, in my driveway, with minimal tools. just alot of effort moving the trans around

Re: LS1 M6 guys inside please!

Why install stock when there is the LS7 clutch?
I have yet to hear anything good about the centerforce LS1 clutch.
I have heard many people say the Stage clutches chatter. Not something I'd want in a clutch.
When it comes time for my clutch change it'll be LS7, Textrallia, or Ram.

Just FYI, the LS6 clutch is your stock clutch and I noticed on auction was ws6store and they're a sponsor here. I have found that one new parts you very rarely find a better deal on ebay anymore. check out the sponsors and GP section. IIRC there is a GP for Textrallia on tech.

I would go with the Seconed one, the first one looks used or at least not new.

Re: LS1 M6 guys inside please!

I had a smilar incident with my clutch going up in smoke about a month ago. I'm still babying it until I get my new pressure plate and I have a few days of nice weather. Just take it easy & you'll be ok. I decided on the Ram HD disc & PP. Contrary to the suggestions of some, I also run an aluminum fidanza & I like it.

the main problem i have now is money... by the end of the summer i was planning on puttin in a 224 cam with about a 100 shot of spray.... I just have basic bolt ons now.. . borla, lid, etc

so the ls6 clutch is the same as the ls1??

Re: LS1 M6 guys inside please!

spec stage 2 or 3..
I want to stay stock on my car just because I know I wont be modding it...
If I were modding it I would go with the Spec.. Mainly because they have the best rep on all the boards I have seen..

The people that say that it chatters usually say it goes away after a short time.. I think the latest GM High Tech Performance shows an install of a clutch and its a Spec...

I would do it myself if mine goes out.. I dont feel its too far away seeing as how I have 71K miles on mine.. and its been driven very hard..
After I got that smell a couple times at the track.. Hot lapping it racing all my friends at Houston Raceway Park, it finally slipped and a week or two later I did a full tranny fluid change just to make it feel better.. and it has been good..

If you're planning more power you sure as hell don't want to slap a stocker back in only to have to change it back out a few months after you cam install.

Yes, the LS6 clutch is stock on 01-02 f-bodies.
