Re: Lot of questions about a Stall converter!

Sounds like there are some differences in opinion as to whether to go with a 2800 or jump up to the 3500 range.

Informative thread, none-the-less.

Well it depends on who was asking. LT1's torque peaks down low in the RPM range so for them the 2800-3000 stall is perfect. LS1's peak torque range is higher in the rpm's so for them 3500-4000 is perfect. We had both asking in this thread so the answers definately will very from one engine platform to the other.

Thanks Darren.

Chances are I'm going to go with a ~3500 stall, 'cause my car does see daily-driving duty in the summer, but it's a weekend warrior too! When I'm cam shopping, I guess I'll look for something that will start to work around ~3500 - 4000, and hopefully a 3500 stall will be sufficient. I'm not planning on running N2O any time soon, but I'm still not going to go too big on the stall either.

As far as the 4L60E being a weak unit, there are a couple builders on this site that, from what I've read anyways, seem to know what they're doing in terms of building them stronger. I don't think I'll be taking my car to an extreme where I'll need to do a TH400 swap, although I can't rule that out either.

Here's a SERIOUS question though (that may benefit all).....I've heard that if you run too big of a stall, you need to get the PCM re-programmed, otherwise it will set a check engine light? Is that true?

The 2001 & 2002 year LS1's have been known to throw code PO757 after a torque converter install. But if you delete TM (or have a shop do it) then all is good again

Ahh, torque management. I'll get rid of it then. I'm looking at buying LS1 Edit or a similar program this year, so that'll take care of TM.
