Lock up Questions and Remedys

Hey guys I noticed when I run down the strip that there is a point to where my car shifts gears and stops pulling as hard. I think it is when my A4 shifts into (I think its 3rd) at about 90ish mph. The car just stops pulling hard, and seems to just die out acceleration wise.

I know that with my 3K stall the shift into 2nd puts me at about 4500RPM, I noticed the shift into 3rd drops me down to around 3K RPMs. Is this due to converter lock up? I dont fully understand the ins and outs of coverters "locking" vs. "non locking" so please excuse me if I sound stupid for asking.

I read something a few months ago about a switch you can use to keep it from locking in these cases. What do you all suggest to help remedy this dead spot? What have you all done to get past the third gear blues??
