leak

Got a small slow leak in my t56 tranny where the two halves of it come together. Is there a gasket there or just rtv. also is this a big problem to fix. any idea of what someone would charge to fix it. i would assume that the whole tranny needs to be dropped

Do you mean the joint between the main case and the extension housing (part that holds the shifter)? Leaks can result from excess pressure in case (check for plugged vent pipe), over-filling (check level), loose bolts (check torque - T56 manual shows 26 lb-ft) or faulty sealant (there is no gasket).

Shoebox has the T56 manual online. The first steps show how to pull the extension housing.

yes its at this location, where can I locate the vent hose? also if it is the silicone between the rear and the main case, do you think this is something I can do without a lift? Thanks

The vent line connects to the passenger side of the main case, at the very top, back by the joint with the extension housing. Its a plastic tube that runs forward and upward, and is held by a clip under one of the bolts that bolts the tranny to the bell housing.

I don't know what the seal material is. You would need to look at the rebuild manual and see what material is used, and whether you can loosen the bolts and slide the extension housing back far enough to clean and reseal the mating surfaces, without doing additional disassembly of the trans. I've never pulled one apart. I just have a spare T56 sitting in the garage, that's useful for reference.

Gotcha, Have a feeling that I will have to bring her to a tranny shop to get a price to fix the seal. I can see the rtv hanging along the connection between the shifter end and the main tranny section so I know its not a gasket. Doesnt show one in the T56 manual either. Just dont wanna get soaked for this. If I had a lift would do it mysellf. Any one in the Long Island NY area that has a lift and willing to help out a fellow Camaro Enthusiast? Leaks suck
