Keep the stall or not - opinions please.
Keep the stall or not - opinions please.
I've been debating lately whether to keep my Vigilante converter or replace it with a stocker. This is my daily driver and has never been to the track and probably never will. I put the converter in to compliment the cam and in anticipation of changing to 3.73's which I never did. The slipping is getting a little old as is the major decrease in fuel mileage since most of my driving is when the converter is unlocked.
I'm on the fence and would like opinions to keep it or put in a stocker. I'll probably see around a 5 mpg improvement on my in town mileage which is pretty motivating right now.
Bring on your opinions.

The stock torque converter will give you back some of it, but if you drive aggressively, you won't see much an improvement. If you drive easy, then yes you will see a gain. The idle characteristics will most likely have to be addressed. If you want to sell the Vigilante? PM me.
I drive like an old man anyway. I accelerate slow and try to keep it under 2500 rpm. I sent the converter to Precision and had it gone through before I put it in. What surprised me was how loose it is for a 2600 rpm rated stall speed. When I put it in reverse to back out of the driveway, the engine is turning 13-1400 rpm before it even moves. I called Precision and they said that's normal.
As mild as my combo is, I'm surprised at the low in town mpg compared to when it was stock.
Dana, I'm sure you don't remember me, but I bought all the parts to rebuild my tranny from you. I was going to give you a call and get your opinion, but I didn't want to take up your time.
