Ok my car has been bucking / grinding for the past two weeks or so now and finally I just turned into my driveway when I shifted into 2nd (about 3k rpm, semi hard shift) i hear a scraping noise so I immediatley put the car in neutral, turned it off and coasted to a stop... I noticed my driveshaft dragging (snapped towards the end of the U-bolts at the rear) and thought I'd push it the rest of the way to my house (100 yards or so). Well the car is in neutral w/ no E-Brake and it now will not budge. I don't know why this is, seems to me since the transmission is completley disconnected from the rear, it should roll freely... maybe it messed something up internally??

Time for a 12 bolt

Yeah i just took the u-bolts off and took the whole drive shaft off the transmission and rear, and the car still wouldnt budge... i hooked a chain up to the front and towed it forward and i hear the most awful grinding coming fromt he rear... i'm guessing the ring and pinion got messed up when the driveshaft snapped and got wedged into the frame (car was still rolling so my gears were locked from the driveshaft not spinning so everything kind of got aten up?? - my synopsis) but anyway I'm thinkin about just a new ring and pinion for saving money... but in all honesty I am just gona let the car sit for a while and drop in a 12 bolt from strange engineering when i get the money . oh and BTW driveshaft off ebay = 100 bucks tyte, more money for a 12 bolt!!!!

 

im thinkin it was your gears in the first place. they finally whent and that is what broke your shaft. i had it happen in my 4x4 the same way. "gears locked up when they broke, that stoped the driveshaft and the hard shift and power snapped the driveshaft. the rebounding shock of the driveshaft breaking <-(cant explain it briefly enough) probably unwedged the gear parts enough to roll again. well kinda. lol

I'd pull the whole rear apart and look for more damage, it's possible it just took out the ring and/or pinion but theres also a chance there's damage to the differential itself or the axles. Instead of buying a 12 bolts you can upgrade the axles for a few hundred and not worry about it until you are making some serious power.
