Interesting T56 problem

I haven't had 5th gear for quite a while now. When you would try to put it into 5th, it would go just grind and not go into gear. Sometimes I could rev-match it and it would pop in, but I didn't try too often for fear of further damage.

On Friday, I had to make a 12 hour drive cross country, so I'm doing 80mph in 6th gear. I'm cruising along decently, and then out of nowhere, I hear what sounds like pieces of metal getting tossed around inside the tranny case, and my RPM's jumped to redline. I used 4th to limp home the rest of the way.

Now when I put it in 5th, it's like putting it in neutral, and sixth is uber strange. I can't really describe it, but it's like it isn't transferring power, but it makes very weird sounds.

Think I stripped gear teeth? That's what I'm afraid of because I'm trying to sell this car for school, and I obviously don't want to put a few grand into a rebuild.

Thanks!

I highly doubt its a bent shiftfork, I would be extremely surprised if it were because the 5/6 one is steel. Unless he is slamming 5th and 6th gear I would consider it impossible, especially since 6th gear worked for a while. I think his syncronizer is bad, the friction material is bad, detent keys are probably broken and chances are it might need a rebuild I can guarantee you that you didnt strip the teeth but a shop will probably want to charge an arm and a leg to fix it.
