Installing Built T56 by my SELF? Ideas?

Ok heres the deal.

I cant get my darn tranny back up there lol.
When I took it out I had 3 other guys to help.

Now they arent around and its just me....a buddy came over to help but between the two of us we couldnt lift the damn thing and hold it and install the slave cylinder at the same time...

all I have is a floor jack really

We almost had it but the guy helping aint too smart so he wasnt really any help...doesnt have any darn common sense lol.

Anyways....anyone know how I can get this darn T56 up there by my self???... just wondering if theres some back-yard tricks that might help?

Im going to see if I can borrow a dremel tool and get a couple 2x4 blocks and see if I cant fashion some kind of cradle out of one.

It was much easier to take out But then I had 6 other arms and hands to help last time..

Thanks in advance guys

I use a floor jack and a two foot piece of 2 x 6. I put the 2 x 6 length wise on the jack and balance the trans with one hand and jack it up with the other. I also use two 4" bolts with the heads cut off. Screw them into the bottom of the bellhousing and use them as guides to slide in the trans.

I usually just drag the tranny up onto my chest and press it up and in. That bolt idea sounds pretty good.

Idk, that doesnt sound too safe to be doing by yourself. If that piece of wood gave, youd have a tranny sitting on your face.

Personally, I would just try to call another friend up to help you out. I like the wood method that rngilliland mentioned, as I have done it before, but with another person. Get him to jack the trans up while you balance it into place, and then slip the bolts in.

Maybe it's just me but balancing and jacking on my own would just worry me.

I put mine in by myself with a tranny track, it was pretty easy. they're cheap at harbor freight. It's alot safer than some of the ideas I have heard in here too... it doesnt want to fall off the jack at all, and you can pretty much stay out of it's way anyway.

Well I didnt get a chance to get out and get some blocks of wood today...but Im going to see if I cant find SOMEBODY to lend a hand....I cant ever get in touch with anybody when I need them argh!

I tried lifting it up onto my chest and installing the slave that way but the slave just doesnt reach that far down....I really need a fat guy to sit it on while I install the slave

I had it on top f me and everything...it just didnt reach and I cant holp it up while also installing the slave...

Plus my Y pipe is a minor obstruction for the tail of the tranny...and it's welded on there so I cant remove it...but I took it out like that but then again it's a lot easier to pull down than push up lol.

Maybe once I get one or two other people on this we can get 'r done

Other than that it looks like my best bet is messing around with blocks of wood....

Too bad I dont have a lift That would be awesome

Thanks guys...wish me luck!

Re: Installing Built T56 by my SELF? Ideas?

Prior to me getting a lift an transmission jack, I pulled and installed my t56 using a 2x4x8 across the car doors, over the shifter hole. To the 2x4 I picked up a 1/4 inch cable sized small 'come along' and connected it to the transmission with tied down straps. I could then jack the tranny in the air from the inside, with the come along, to the correct height and from under the car, manuver the tranny about to install it.

That's how we did my buddy's 5speed in his stang. Chest and press. The t56 is kinda on the heavy side, tho. 145lbs. (shipping weight that is)

Bolt the slave up first. then press it up. I also like the bolt idea. You can allways connect the slave line after. Just be sure to white lith the input shaft. Slides in much easier.

If I disconnect the slave from the line and bolt it on now....I'll have to bleed the slave/master though right?

Wow... You're one slip away from a trip to the hospital, but dont worry, I'm sure it wont happen to you since other people have done it successfully.

Re: Installing Built T56 by my SELF? Ideas?

Go get a cheap transmission jack from Harbor Freight, jack up the rear of the car to be a bit higher than the front (this compensates for the fact that the rear of the motor is sagging a bit), and the trans should slide right in as long as the clutch plate(s) has been lined up properly. Before spending the $50 on the trans jack, I'd previously used a couple tie-down straps to "secure" the transmission to a regular floor jack.

Alternatively, two guy should be able to lift it into place in just a few minutes. I can lift the trans up myself, but freeing up a hand to get a bolt or two into place is completely out of the question.

Re: Installing Built T56 by my SELF? Ideas?

Well I finally got the darn thing in there...it wasnt hard at all with another person to help balance it on the jack...

That just reminded me how valuable good help is!

Im all greasy right now still...everything is all back in there and Im letting the tranny fluid soak in for a bit while I take a smoke break..

All that's left is to change the oil filter and fill it up with oil, and go get some RTV sealant for the shifter and bolt that sucker on...then I can see if it makes any wierd noises before I take it out for a spin.

Thanks for the input guys...for everyone else trying to do this crap by your self....just go get a willing and able person to lend a hand for christ's sake! Got that sucker in there in like half an hour lol.
