The ins and outs of slipper clutches
The ins and outs of slipper clutches
Who can explain the ins and outs of a slipper clutch to me? I've only recently heard of them and only have a vague idea that they are easier on the drivetrain than a normal clutch, are probably very expensive and are probably very hard to set up. If they aren't tremendously more than a premium high performance clutch, it might be worth it for a street driven car that sees mostly city traffic.
So, what are the pros and cons of these things?
Thanks, Don.

Don,
My understanding is that a "slipper" clutch is nothing more than an adjustable pressure plate and a sintered iron clutch disk. The pressure plate is adjusted so that there is a slight slip at launch. The iron disk tends to grip harder as it heats up. I've heard the iron disk is not too street friendly. I'll be able to report more on this topic after I finish my current clutch conversion and get this car back to the track.
Switching to an adjustable PP is not for the faint of heart for us LT1 guys. My project will switch to a blow proof bellhousing, long finger style adjustable PP, Iron disk, New Viper T56 transmission, and a host of other stuff.
I'll post the results.

Thanks SABLT194, I didn't think I was going to get any answers on this. I was kind of surprised.
From what you are saying about it grabbing harder as it heats up, I don't think I'll be wanting one for the street. I drive mostly in town. About 9 miles to work and 9 miles back. What I'd end up with is a clutch that never engaged in the same place twice.
Thanks for the info, and keeping me out of trouble
