Unhappy I'm desperate for a rearend!

I own a 1984 Z28, 305 H.O., 5 speed, rear disk, coil springs, 10 bolt.

I live in a very small town and was quoted by a shop $800.00 to $1000.00 to rebuild the rear end. (it's the spider gears)

I called the local wrecking yard and they only have one complete rear end out of a pontiac firebird for $450.00 (no core). Then I'll have to pay for some one to do the work.

I hate having people work on my car, cuz every time I do, something else gets F****D up! I cant hardly trust anyone and I dont have that kind of $$$ to have rebuilt by a shop.

So, Am I totally screwed w/out my baby?

If you can buy one out of the salvage yard. Why don't you just replace it yourself. It isn't that hard of a task to do. If you can remember how to put things back together then take pictures as you go. I'd never pay someone to swap out something that I could do myself. If I don't know how to swap out something I learn how to.

I know its not identical but worse comes to worse, maybe just get a 4th gen rear, I mean I honeslty have 2 spare sitting in my garage right now. They can't be that hard to get.

I have one that you can have for free.....everything is fine except the ring gear is missing 2 teeth. That is, if you want to pay for shipping...

shipping may be a pain..

Well here's the thing.

Do you trust yourself and friends to install it?

Or can you find a shop that you trust to do a good job without ripping you off?

I was in a similar situation.. I decided I needed the car up asap, since it was my daily driver to get to work.. so I got a shop to do it.. also got them to rebuild a salvage repacement, and put in 3.73's and a T2R diff while they were there.

If you can wait for weeks, and can spend the cash, getting a 12 bolt or 9" would be great.
