Question I'm close to breaking my thumb every morning.

I've had my 1995 Z28 for about nine years now, and although it's been nearly the same, the automatic shifter has been giving me even more trouble than usual this past year. The longer it sits without driving, the longer it takes me to push that button down to release park each time.Sometimes the verbal bombing I give it before I can get going takes several minutes.Once it releases,it goes in and out easily for the drive.Does anyone know what is hanging up that causes it to stick so badly?Has a real cure ever been posted?
Honestly,it seems like I might break my thumb bone on that shifter!

Take the retainer staple or screw out and figure out if it's a sticking ****.

You might try unplugging the BTSI solenoid to see if it is involved. Otherwise, some cleaning and lubrication might be in order.

Re: I'm close to breaking my thumb every morning.

Now years later, I did in fact unplug the btsi solenoid at the beginning, but with no effect. Also, the trans eventually was rebuilt due to fourth gear loss, and the shifter still sticks as it has for last sixteen years! What I do now: pop out the ashtray, and any slight push against the solenoid shaft frees it up. What I would like though, is to once and for all cure the issue! Is it the button, the rod, or solinoid ( still unplugged)??

Re: I'm close to breaking my thumb every morning.

Did you try what "jmd" suggested and remove the ****? Then just press down on the white rod directly to see if the problem is in the shifter or the ****/button.

This video shows the mechanism, but it may not help much. In the video, I am pressing down on the white shifter rod with the **** removed while holding down the brake pedal. That releases the BT solenoid and allows it's actuator shaft to move forward and back as you can see in the video. It could be sticking in the extended position.
