Talking I didn't think I could do it. Ratchet shifter in an a4.

One day quite a while ago I got a great deal on a B&M mega shifter and I thought "Hey I bet I could make it work.". I bought it without even ever looking under the center console.

When it finally arrived at my house I got all excited and ran out and tore apart my center console only to be met with a jungle of wires/metal/linkages. 3 linkages? What for? I did a little research online and eliminated 2 of them and set to work trying to install the shifter. I got the old one out and mounted the new shifter and looked at the center console and thought this will never fit.

I left the console off for about 2 weeks just to enjoy the shifter until it went up on ebay. Buuuhhhhttttt since I'm now gainfully unemployed and have nothing but time on my hands I gave it the old college try. It took all day (well about 2pm - 8pm) but I got it in and it looks semi stock. I've got some finall adjustments to get it to fit how I'd like it to but it looks pretty good right now. I wish someone before me had a guide on doing this because I swore more times in those 6 hours than I have ever sworn in my life.

PICS!

I have to get some kind of boot for the shifter and I want to mess with how the PRND321 thing lines up but I'm pretty happy with it right now.

I love ratchet shifters, I have a B&M quicksilver in mine. I'll try and get pics later. It's 10X more fun when you have a reverse manual valve body though

yeah all those linkage things are a bitch, i just yanked them all out. Had to figure out the wiring (guess and check) i assume u got all that done? but you might want to look into a boot like the c5 vette's have on the autos. cover the whole thing, and cut out a hole to mount the prn4321 plate...

like that. but good job man, i know it's alot of custom work, nothing fit right when i did mine but you just have to stay at it til it all works right. BTW, out of curiousity, are you just ratcheting all the way down to first and then popping it forward for each gear when u want to use it? like i said it works a lot better with a reverse valve body but i guess u can use it either way

I'm looking for a boot for it, probably gona have to have something made up for it. I'm not ratcheting all the time. I usually leave it in overdrive but when I want to play around I ratchet all the way down to 1st and then push it up/forward to got to 2nd and so on.

I have been wanting to put a quicksilver in my 94 A4 but I as well looked under the console and said....meh.... The linkages are not as much as a problem for me as the sensor hanging off the right side of the stock shifter. Did you adapt this to the new shifter somehow? Or did you eliminate it completely?

Thats what I would like to know.
That little black box is the only thing holding me back from installing a B&M Hammer shifter.

There are 6 wires coming from the black connector on the right side of the shifter. Two are for reverse lights, two are for neutral saftey switch (nss), and two for the rear hatch release.

The purple and dark green are for the nss.
The brown and light green are for the back up lights.
And the last two (I forget the colors) are for the rear hatch release. It will only open if you are in park but if you connect it to an aftermarket nss it will blow the fuse so I just connected them together.

I'm still waiting to get it looking how I want before I make a write up. I got all Martha Stewart on it and sewed up a custom shift boot for it but I don't like how I have it installed. I have to find a better way then just taping it up on the under side of the console.

Very nice.
I was waiting for someone to be the guinea pig on this one.
So now all I need to know is how did you wire up the NSS and the back up lights?
I know one of the cables is for that step on the brake to shift from park crap and one is the shift cable itself but what is the third one for?

There is a black cylinder with a rod that connects to the shifter itself. That is what keeps you from shifting unless your foot is on the brake. The nss just keeps the car from being started in gear. The b&m shifter comes with a nss and back up light relays.

I see the linkage that prevents you from shifting out of park unless you step on the brake.....the other is the shift linkage....what is the third one for?

Sorry for so many q's
