How to test a bad convertor?
Im gonna have my 383 up and running and my tranny slips 3rd gear around 5500RPM (around WOT lockup) could this be a convertor issue or just bad bands? I droped the pan and it was clean.
Is there a way to test the convertor?

if the converter is bad it will act up in any gear or when it is suppose to be locked up. lock up should not be engaged at wot. the band is only applied in 2nd and 4th. in 3rd gear you have the forward and 3-4 clutches applied (basically all the clutches in the aluminum drum, in manual 3rd the over run clutches are applied as well) and the forward sprag holding. did the fluid smell burnt? sounds like you have a hydraulic pressure leak inside the trans.
