How to remove tranny with Heads off?

I am having a really bad chatter, I'm guessing, when taking off from a start. I've posted about it before without much help. I had a Mcleod clutch(Not twin disc) installed by a mechanic with the stock flywheel. I'm in the process of removing my cylinder heads and was wondering what would be the easiest way to remove the tranny so I can swap out the clutch with a different one...possibly SPEC stage 3-4? I've heard it can be a pain to get to all the bolts. Any advice?

Thanks

Undo the shifter in the car, then unbolt the tranny from the belhousing and remove it. The belhousing bolts then become very accessible.

So I can't just remove the bellhousing bolts with the tranny still mounted on it? Please keep in mind I've never removed the tranny.

P.S. SMOKN...I just read through your website. Man you went through hell with all that stuff. I was thinking about just welding up some turbo's on my SLP's and see how it will run. Nothing big...maybe some T-04's from the junkyard. After reading through your site I'm having second thoughts.

Wise choice.

You can unbolt the entire tranny from the motor, but the top bolts are kinda tough to get to. You'll need to combine several extensions and maybe a swivel joint on the end by the socket to get them out. Not impossible, but it's not the easiest thing in the world.

Well.... I tried both ways, I got all the bellhousing bolts out no problem, but then I couldn't get the damn tranny out of there, so I ended up just unbolting the tranny from the bellhousing, and found that to be 100 times easier. And yes as he said, the bellhousing bolts become cake with the tranny off.
Oh yeah, and if you do try to get the whole thing off, bring about 3 ft of extensions and extra uni-wiggles.

I've got several extensions that have been welded together w/ the swivel on the end just for this reason. It only gets used maybe a dozen times a year, but man is it handy.

Actually I was under there just yesterday removing the headers and I can't even see the top of the bellhousing bolts. I think I will just remove the transmission from the bellhousing and then just remove the bellhousing.

To remove tranny is just:
1. remove driveshaft
2. unbolt torque arm from tranny
3. unbolt shifter
4. remove slave cylinder
5. unbolt transmission from bellhousing
6. unbolt bellhousing to get to clutch/flywheel

Any other tips?

Thanks for your all your respones as well...I really appreciate it.

Yeah pretty much, heres how my step by step process went....
1. Look at underneath of car and wonder why the hell I'm doing this.

2. Take off Driveshaft and Tunnel brace
3. Take off Torque arm
4. take off slave cylinder
5. Take off Cat hanger
6. support tranny and engine
7. Take off crossmember
8. Get pissed off that I forgot to take off the shifter
9. Take off shifter
10. Drink beer.
11. Go buy more extensions
12. Unbolt bellhousing from engine
13. Mess with bellhousing to try and get it out
14. realize it wasn't coming out
15. drink beer
16. Unbolt Tranny from bellhousing(it's a bish when the bellhousing isn't bolted on..)
17. Got rid of the jack that the tranny was sitting on, because it kept wanting to fall off
18. Call friends over for "beer"
19. Enlist friends to help pull tranny out by hand
20. Drink beer.
21. Drink more beer
22. Put it all back together.
23. Drink beer.
