how quick was your tranny removal?

Im just wondering to see how fast I was.. I took the tranny/torque arm/drive shaft/bellhousing/clutch and starter all out of the car tonight. Not to mention wiring. Started at about 9:30 PM and finished about 11:15 PM.. Including cleaning and putting back the tools.. On my back, by my self, and on my garage floor with jack stands.. That took me about a little over 1 1/2 hours to Get Er Done

M6 removals always go quicker than a4 removals.

Re: how quick was your tranny removal?

My mechanic buddy who helps me a lot (or actually I help him mostly. LOL!) had my 4L60E tranny removed from my 94Z in 20 minutes. He is very fast, knows nearly all sizes of all bolts/nuts from memory. Of course, this is the same guy who in one day removed the entire exhaust system off my bud's car (manifolds all the way to muffler tips) and took off my car MAC headers and a Borla exhaust and then installed my used MAC headers and Borla on the other guy's car and then installed Hooker long tubes and a Mufflex 4" exhaust on mine Also made a couple block off plates and fab'd some other stuff too. So, he's not "normal" so I wouldn't expect the 20 minute A4 removal to be normal either

I think it took us 3 hours to get my manual out the first time, due to it not having been removed recently. All the bolts were really in there.

The second time the next day to adjust stuff it took maybe a little over an hour.

Re: how quick was your tranny removal?

First time without knowing all the tools, tricks, and such I did my A4 in 3.5 hours, taking my time.
After I knew what I was doing I did a buddies in 1.5 hours...

Both were on my back with hand tools, and that includes the time it took getting it jacked up 2.5 - 3' needed to get the tranny out from under the car!

A4- ~3 hours
M6- ~1.5 hours

The auto really is more of a PITA to remove.

Re: how quick was your tranny removal?

The second time I removed the M5 from my '85 it took me 38 minutes, and that was taking my time. I'm pulling my M6 sometime in the next month for a clutch, and I'm wagering I'll have it out in half an hour. Swivel sockets and extensions are your friend. Really there's not much holding it in there. Shifter, tranny mount bolt, four crossmember bolts, four DS bolts, one TQ arm bolt, and six bellhousing bolts, plus two connectors. Just don't forget to disengage the clutch fork!

I had my tranny, bellhousing, clutch and flywheel out of my car in 45 minutes, and that included putting the car on a lift and finding all the tools and cleaning them and putting them back away.

Re: how quick was your tranny removal?

Removed and reinstalled an M6 in about 2-1/2 hours w/ a friend helping to manuever the transmission. That includes putting a new SPEC clutch in. No lift, just blocks under the wheels and a single air line.

I pulled the 400 out of my '95 in about an hour. Of course, I don't have a torque arm mount.

Re: how quick was your tranny removal?

forget how long did it take to take it out, that was easy for me. Getting it in by myself was almost impossible since I don't have a tranny jack. I took me forever to get it aligned right so the little pins off the tranny would line up on the bellhousing. And I was very sore the next day
