how much worse will my gas mileage be goin from 3.23 to 3.73?

Almost nil. I went from 2.73's to 3.73's last year and hardly noticed a difference at all. On the highway I was still able to pull ~450 kms (280 miles) on a tank of gas, which is no worse than what I can normally get with 2.73's. My average mileage has always been around ~375 kms (230 miles) and that never really changed either. In truth, I felt like the car's mileage was more consistant and actually better for city driving, because the motor isn't working so hard to get the car moving at every set of lights!
I don't think you would see any difference at all going from 3.23's to 3.42's. But even going to 3.73's, you'd hardly notice it.

i was reading some people say just stick with the 3.23 and get a stall converter instead of gears like 3.73 or 4.10, what are you guys opinions? gears are much cheaper should i go with 3.73 gears ? how much worse would the gas be with 4.10? now if i do go with 3.73 who can i send the pcm to to get the speedo calibrated and wouldnt i also have to get the shift points adjusted? who does mail tuning that would get the shift points perfect? would the 3.73 make the car jerk or surge or anything worse than the 3.23? thanks for the help

Are you more street or strip? I think the stall would show great gains at the strip, but on the street lots of times you dont hit it from a dead stop. So it would seem to me that the 3.73's would be more useful since they apply at all RPM's. Correct me if I am wrong, cause I would like to learn, I am in the same boat.

Re: how much worse will my gas mileage be goin from 3.23 to 3.73?
After switching back to the auto, i ran the 3.73s in my car for only a day or so, so I didn't get to do a mpg comparison. They feel incredible with the auto... 1st and 2nd gear are wicked. But i do entirely too much interstate driving, and running my engine at near 3k rpm all the time really bothers me. Hence the reason i picked up a 3.23 rear (which is a good bit better than the 2.73s). i like the way the car feels all around with the 3.23s and coupling them with a 3k stall would be a pretty potent combination.
It's just my opinion. I'll admit though... if i didn't have to drive the intertates so much, i'd put the 3.73 rear back in it and leave it there. Milege with the 3.23s are about 2mpg worse over the 2.73s. I doubt the 3.73s would be more than 1 or 2 mpg worse than the 3.23s.

fastcaddie, do your really like the way a 3k stall/3.23 car feels for daily driving? reason i ask is cuz i have that setup and after driving my bro's 3.73 z28 im jealous. his car feels tons faster than mine, and it doesnt need too much rpm to get it moving from stoplight to stoplight. i never have any regrets about buying the stall before installing gears, only complaint is the transmission feels like a powerglide. shifts so soft sometimes you cant even tell what gear its in.

Sorry if that was misleading... no stall here, just stating that it would probably be a good all-around combination. For me at least. The 3.73s were an improvement over the 3.23s, but not a ton more. With 3.23s and shifting at 5700, 1st winds out to ~40mph, 2nd goes to ~80, 3rd to ~128. The 3.73s at 5700 was about 1st to ~35, 2nd to ~70, and 3rd to about ~117. So it's not that much of a difference. The 3.73s would spin a hell of a lot more though, while the 3.23s dig in and grip. I hated everything about the 2.73s, other than 80mph at only 2k rpm going down the I-state.
[edit]- does your brother have a stall? Stalls can have different feels to them, depending on how they were setup. Two different convertors even at the same stall can feel much different. Some are looser, some are tighter, some get you off the line quicker, and others tend to kill top end due to slippage. Usually one with about a 2.0 STR has a good all around feel. Two examples are a couple of friends of mine. One has a 4k stall convertor while the other has a 3k stall (both have 3.73 gears in old school camaros). Believe it or not, i'd rather drive the car with the 4k stall since it was tighter at all rpm, until you gunned it (where it's shoot up to a little over 4k). It just depends...
