Im having my rear end gears changed and the shop told me 250.00 just for labor. I originally just wanted my bearings changed but they said 250.00 for labor regardless of if they change the gear out or not. Does 250.00 for labor sound to high? Gears and bearings came to 350.00. Thats 600.00 total labor and mat'l.

 

buy a magnetic dial indicator, micrometer and pinion depth tool... go to any informative f-body instructional web page and do it yourself... took me 2 days, shop had to press on the new bearings. been running fine with hard launches for 20,000mi. First time I had ever opened a diff. and first time to ever rebuild the inside of a rearend.

theres a guy around me that does TOP NOTCH work with rears and charges $225 labor for gear swaps so $250 doesn't sound ridiculous expensive.

im assuming since you said 350, you didnt include a new posi. it might be a good idea, if you've got some hard miles and/or burnouts on your car, to get a $99 Zexel Torsen Take-off posi from SLP....its not new, but not really used either and its always a good idea to freshen up the posi if you can afford it. i've had one in my car for about 10,000 pretty rough miles and she still does burns both tires every time.

 

$150 and max fair price I would pay is $200 for only labor.

I had my gears installed for $100 and all i supplied was the ring and pinion and he supplied the rest

 

around here, a fair price is $150-$250 for labor. but, if u can do it yourself......more power to ya.

 

I bought a 2:73 from a 74 camaro from an auto salvage for $100.00 to get me on the road until I can get my other rear end worked on. I see you're from Houston too, can you give me the shop name and number that worked on yours?
