4 quarts....not sure the specs on Pennzoil Synchromesh but all T56s require Dexron III fluid. Might wanna make sure whatever you pour in says Dexron III on it somewhere. If it says Type F anywhere, that's the wrong stuff....

Because you will not not if you have overfilled it. Overfilling it would be impossible when doing it the correct way through the plug. You have no idea what fluid is still in the thing before filling. Do it whatever way you want, its your car.Originally Posted by AL SS590 M6

I'm working on my '72 Vega in dirt. Literally, dirt. Doing a V8/6-speed swap. I don't cut corners even when I get stickers and **** in my shirts. I guess it boils down to how many corners you want to cut.

I also did the 5-lug conversion on my car and has a 12-bolt with 3.73s.
Hey man, do it however you want but if you have too much oil in your trans and it foams and takes out the gearsets you are the only one to blame.
Make a set of wood stands to drive your car onto for next time. I can drive my IROC up about 2 feet in the air in about 2 minutes. No jack required.

Well, I cant belive this got bumped back up nearly 2 years ago. Anyways I am going to be changing the fluid to dextron soon it shifts a little knotchy. The trans was freshly rebuilt when I filled it through the shifter so there was no fluid left in it. Why the hell would I want to do it hte hard way when the shifter was already off?
Not to mention when you do fill it upthrough the hole you have to have the whole car level, just driving it up the ramps in the front is going to throw the whole thing off

Man I sure wish you guys would read before you post. He said newly rebuilt dry transmission. It takes 4 quarts. You dump it in the shifter hole. Then if you're **** like me you check it before you pu the car on the road. Oh yeah, maybe the tranny is shipped bone dry. Oh yeah maybe they have a small amount already installed just in case some dumbass does not fill it at all. It does need some amount of lube for assembly. They can say dry all day long but I am confident that it aint dry.
Newly rebuilt does not mean dick with respect to how much fluid is in it or not, you dont know if a small amount of fluid was added or not. At least the correct method of installing fluid removes ALL possibility of overfilling.
Why someone would pay hundreds for a rebuild then fill the tranny with the assumption its shipped dry is just stupid.
