How i removed the pilot bushing

I couldn't get the pilot bushing out of the crankshaft using the conventional methods (grease with a socket/ slide hammer with the pilot bushing removal tool) so i went and bought a 1" bi-metal hole saw from home depot and drilled the bushing out. I was carefull not to damage the crankshaft and was able to remove it fairly easily. I think this may help anyone who is having problems getting there pilot bushing out.

I used the wet toilet paper method, worked great.

I just used a pilot bearing puller, I don't think it gets any easier than that.

Actually I just rented it from Advanced Auto Parts. I know the guys that work there so I just went and "borrowed" it and took it back when I was done. Took me about 5 min to get it out and I didn't get grease all over the place trying to hydraulic it out.

Re: How i removed the pilot bushing

I found a bolt with an outside diameter just big enough to thread through the bushing and push it out. easy

Re: How i removed the pilot bushing

I tried the tool from autozone and snapped one of the fingers right off the tool while i torque down on the spreader. Still got my money back for the pos tool, but the bushing was still stuck. My bearing was pressed in flush with the back of the crank hub and the jaws on the tool had nothing to grip. maybe autozone just has crappy rental tools.

Good idea. The one time I had trouble, an older different car, I used a sharp chisel and split it all the way down then used a screwdriver to fold it in, that made it loose.

Same here. No renting or buying tools. Just popped right out in 2 minutes or less.

I used a bearing puller. I was told that there is a plug behind the pilot bearing on the crank. If you use the grease method you can actually push the plug out and oil will just flow out if the crank. Dont know how true it is but thought I would share.
