How Hard Is It To Change The Spider Gear From One Auburn Diff To Another?
I thought there was no way. The Auburns are disposable, at least when it comes to the cone clutch. When I had mine out (and it had broken spider gears) I could see no way to take it apart. Auburn sells nothing for repair or rebuilding that I can tell from their website. Sorry for no answer from me but I'm watching for one with you.
A spider gear can be replaced. I had this problem with a diff that I bought ~3 years ago ... it was a 3-series carrier, with 4.10 gears. BUT, it had a broken tooth on a spider gear.
My friend had bought a complete replacement unit for his car (he swapped factory 2.73's --> factory 3.42's) and his original unit was an Auburn as well, (but 2-series, obviously). Since he was no longer using it, I got it off him as a "donor" for mine, just for a spider gear (since I shopped around, and found I couldn't buy just 1 spider gear anywhere).
My Dad (mechanic) did the actual job, but basically, the pin that goes through the center of the diff, holding those plates in place, that hold the springs in, can be pressed out, and you can pull all the "guts" out. If I could find a picture, I could describe it a little better, but YES, the individual parts can be replaced, if you have replacements (that's the bigger problem, from my experience ... getting parts).
It wasn't exactly "simple", but I think it was more "tedious" than anything to do

You're right. I was on the Auburn D-Rex page and the statement was that the unit can be rebuilt but not the cone as it is integral, hence the D-Rex replacement program. The page shows rebuild kits for the rest of the unit below the disclaimer.
