Here's how to keep ABS with a aftermarket rearend.

I have seen many posts about keeping ABS when you switch rearends and this is how you have to do it. I got this information from another board member that got it from another guy. Who i don't know so i don't want to steal credit if this is your idea. I just want to get the info out to people who need it. With that a side here is how you do it. I was told you need to make a reluctor gear to go on the yoke of the driveshaft. It needs to have approx 27-28 teeth. The Gear also needs to be approx. 3/4" wide. This number is determined by 110/4. The stock reluctor ring in the rear has 110 teeth and it spins approx. 1/4th as slow as your driveshaft if you have aftermarket gears. I wanted the gear to be approx 3 inches so i went to my friends machine shop and he told me i needed a gear with 28 teeth with #10 pitch. I just went to a local shop and had them order me a gear. It was made by martin i believe. I then had to have the shoulder machined off the gear and then have the gear bored to fit my driveshaft yoke. You want to have the gear made about .002 smaller than the yoke so you can heat it up and install in on the yoke right behind the transmission. Once it has cooled it won't budge. Then you need to remove the old ABS sensor out of the back of the rear end housing and make a extender wiring harness to run it up to the rear of the tranny. Finally make a bracket to mount the Sensor on so that way it is right over the reluctor ring on the driveshaft yoke. I was told you need a gap of .024 between the sensor and gear. I tried that and the first time the motor torqued over it messed up the sensor. I just bent it back about 1/8th of a inch and it works fine. I have tested this on a dirt road and i do have working ABS with out a light now. If this didn't make since email me for more info. Here is a pic of the gear after it was machined and one of someone elses setup i used to make my system.

I tried to let people know about this when I first did it almost 3 years ago, but not many people seemed interested. It has worked on my car perfectly. That second picture is my car, I am almost embarased at how dirty it is under there!!

You did rebalance the driveshaft after installing this gear, right?
Hmm, I wonder why the factory didn't do it that way.

actually i didn't rebalance it. The gear i imagine is probably pretty balanced. The car has seen 90 mph and no vibes yet.

You all sure like making thing difficult. Good after market manufacturers offer they're differentials with either 3 or 4 channel ABS. You just have to tell them what you need!!

You can Ford rears made to fit our cars cheaper than 12 bolts. The only down side is they don't have ABS so for a little time and less than $100 bucks you can have ABS. cheaper ford rear like a 8.8 or 9 inch with ABS or pay a lot more dough for a 12 bolt. Tough decision

Thanks, but the only thing i can do is take credit for following 96WS6TA's pictures and information that i obtained through someone else. I guess the only thing i can take credit for is having a big mouth and spreading the word

Well thanks to the both of you because now this is going to make throwing that 9" in the car much much much more easier

One other question. Did you have to change the length of the DS, or the slip yoke to get it to work right and not hit the tranny?

Just wondering because I'm pretty sure I'll have to get a custom length ds for the 9"

One other thing, then do you have to have a different reluctor ring for every set of gears? Guess you would have to then right? Just thinking out loud since I know you don't when its mounted on the diff.....to late and I can't think straight.

On mine i didn't have to shorten the DS with the 8.8 I didn't put my ring all the way down on the yoke. Right now i have about .65 in. space between the ring and the tranny. I don't really understand your question on the gears. If you are talking about needing a diff reluctor ring because the driveshaft will spin diff. speeds because of the gears used then i believe the answer is no. If you think about it you change gears in your stock rear and it doesn't effect anything.

Thats what made me think that you had to run a different recluctor ring for different gear sets. But yeah your right, it wouldn't make much sence to do it there if you don't have to change it in the rear end. It was late when I posted
