Help! Hole in transmission housing!

Well, as the title says, my mechanic said he saw a hole in the transmission. I had been getting a vibration at certain RPMs and he said that something (but couldn't determine exactly what) must have come loose, put a hole in the tranmission casing, and now the torque converter is not spinning "true", causing the vibration.

I haven't had a chance to look myself yet, but I thought I would ask the collective wisdom of this forum about the best way to proceed.

If there is a hole in the transmission, and let's say it came from something inside, wouldn't I notice poor/bad/non-exsistant transmission behavior? The tranny shifts just fine; I really notice no difference in the transmission behavior itself.

My "crazy idea" (or crazy hope) is that something else (not in the tranny) let loose, so I can just JBWeld the hole, get a new torque converter and possibly input shaft and be on my way. That sounds so much better than paying a transmission shop several thousand dollars for a rebuilt tranny.

Any thoughts/hints/what-to-look-for ideas?

Thanks.

Jeff

I would think if you have vibration problems, then you have more problems then just the hole in the housing, its just a matter of time if the TC is spinning off axis then it will eat the front seal/bearings in no time. Where is the hole at? Pan? Casting?

My understanding was the hole is in the casting, not the pan. I'm not losing any fluid so I am also assuming the hole is near the top.

I agree I have to stop driving it and just get under there and look for myself. It's just strange that the TC would be affected. The mechanic (and I do trust his work) couldn't find missing bolts or missing weights or anything from the TC or flywheel.
