HELP...Car won't go in any gear....

I started my car yesterday and put it in reverse and backed out. It went in fine. When i tried to take it out of reverse it got sort of stuck. But i was able to put it in 1st gear and then drive to my girlfriends house. When i got there i put it in neutral and went inside. When we were leaving i started the car and i tried to put it in reverse and nothing. It wouldn't let me put it in reverse. So i tried to put it in 1st and it wouldn't let me go in that either. So i tried every gear and it wouldn't go in any of them. It doesn't grind or anything it just won't go in now matter how hard i push. I turned off the car and it let me go into 3rd gear but that was about it. I tried several times and it just won't go into any gear. Anybody have any ideas on what this could be. I don't have any other transportation right now so i need to get my car back on the road as fast as possible. Thanks.

It sounds like your clutch isn't disengaging. Could be your hydro system or the clutch fork.

Re: HELP...Car won't go in any gear....

Okay here is an update on my tranny situation. I checked the slave cylinder and it moves good when you press on the clutch. The clutch fork looked okay as far as i could tell with the tranny still bolted on. Here is the weird part though. If i turn the car off i can put it in 1st gear. If i start the car in 1st the tires start to spin. Even if i push in the clutch the tires don't stop spinning. It does this also in 2nd and 3rd gear. Except in 3rd if i let out on the clutch the car will die most of the time. So there is some new info. Any ideas on what it could be with that new info before i have to drop the tranny?

Has your flyweel been surfaced?
I've been told if over .030 is removed the flywheel need to be shimed out.
I've also heard Mcleod makes a better/needed? slave cyl.

why would it start doing this after driving for a while?? My car has started doing the same thing but not completely. Mine just started having a hard time shifting while driving. My flywheel was resurfaced but it has been fine for the first 500 miles. How do you "shim" a flywheel?

Re: HELP...Car won't go in any gear....

I've only been warned about this as a potential problem, which is of interest to me as I've just installed a blower, 429 at rear wheels, and now need my first clutch. It sounds like the factory slave cyl has limited travel over a pre defined/not adjustable center line. Moving the surface of the flywheel 030 requires more travel than the factory unit can deliver. In an old mechanical clutch there was an adjustment, but not on hydraulic slaves. My blower tuner says Mcleod makes a replacment slave cyl to correct this issue. He also says to shim out the flywheel, I would assume a machinist .030 washer between the flywheel and the crank, on each bolt.

Re: HELP...Car won't go in any gear....

Thanks for the info! I did a search on this site about clutch not disengaging and came up with some more possible answers. One that I am going to check into was the fact that the PP that Spec sends out with their sII and SIII kits (which is what I have,The SIII), is made to have a featherlite pedal and has been causing some non disengagement problems. I am checking into this as of today. And hope that Spec will help out in this matter.

Well i don't think it is my flywheel. I got a brand new Flywheel, PP, and clutch from Mcleod about 6000 miles ago. My master cylinder and slave cylinder have about 14,000 on them. It is just a stock GM replacement but i don't think they could of went out already. The slave cylinder seems to move fine.

Have you tried to bleed the hydrolics? I was told today from SPEC that our problem sounds like a hydrolic problem. I am going to have to figure out a way if there is one to bleed the system just to make sure that is not the problem.

Re: HELP...Car won't go in any gear....

I get the same "clutch creep" too!! Master and slave were bench bled together, and bled again once back in the car. I put in a Spec II with the attendant shim that went behind the slave cylinder housing (per instructions), but I don't think it was thick enough. Every gear is hard, and the clutch definately isn't disengaging. I'm going to fashion another shim for the rear of the slave, and we'll see if that doesn't clear things up. Keep ya posted...

Re: HELP...Car won't go in any gear....

How are you shimming the rear of the slave? Doesn't that push the slave out farther making the rod have to travel farther to disngage the clutch?? ? Maybe I'm thinking backwards to what you have done. Let me know how this is working for you!
