have a question about getting gears installed on my Ls1 camaro
i have a Ls1 camaro with stock 273 gears and iam going to get 342 gears for it, my question is when i get my gears installed how much off will my speedo be off by? can i just gets the gears installed and drive it or will i need to tune the car to get my speedo accurate? would i have to buy a hypertech programmer? also when getting my 342 gears installed is there anything else that needs to be replaced besides the ring and pinion gear? also how should i break in the rearend? also what the differance between the 3 series carrier and the 2-series carrier

1) The speedometer will read high by about ~25%. IE: at 60 mph, the speedo will be reading 75 mph.
2) Yes, you can just drive the car like that, but it would be best to have the speedo reading accurately so that there's no question about how fast you're going (especially around cops
). Also, the odometer will register 25% more mileage than the car is actually getting.3) You could buy a Hypertech or similar programmer, or if you know a shop with a programmer like LS1 Edit, you can go that route. I think even a GM dealership can re-calibrate the speedo for you, and I think there's even a box (don't know if it's SLP or something?
) that can be bought specifically to re-cal your speedo and nothing else (search the net for that).4) While the differential is apart, it's a good time to check/replace all the inner and outer axle bearings, pinion bearings, and replace the pinion seal. Depending on the mileage on your car, the bearings are probably fine, but I'd recommend (although it may actually be necessary) to replace the pinion seal.
5) The new gears may come with instructions on break-in, but basically, drive nice and easy for the first few miles, then as long as you know everything is okay (the car drives fine with no gear whine or vibrations) take it for a good ~1/2 hour cruise at city and highway speeds. Let the car cool down for a couple hours, maybe take it for another drive, and at this point, it should be 100%
6) Since your car has 2.73's, you have a 2-series carrier. Order 3.42's for a 2-series carrier. IF you had 3.23's or 3.42's from the factory, then you would have had a 3-series carrier. Even if you wanted 3.73's or 4.10's, they can be ordered for your 2-series.
Hope I answered your question for you?
yes i have the 273 gears so then the 342 gears that i want to buy that are from a 00 ss camaro will not work with my rearend due to it being a 3 series carrier..where can i buy 342 gears for a 2 series carrier?
I am sure that some of the vendors here sell gears.
Here is the vendor list
Just browse through some of the websites and look for deals.

You can check around but CMotorsports probably has the best price on 2 series gears. Their selling them for the same price as the 3 series which is unheard of. Just ordered a set last night from them. $175.00 for the gears. Great price on the install kit as well at $75.00 and the kit includes pinion and carrior bearings.

I would vote against getting gears for the 2-series carrier. Replace the carrier with a 3-series carrier and go with the gears you want.
If you really want to scream off the line, 3.73 rear and a 3200 stall torque converter ....

Why, what's the difference?
If anything, the ring gear built for a 2-series will be thicker than its 3-series counterpart, so I'd say it would probably be a slightly stronger gear
. I don't see the problem running normally 3-series ratios on a 2-series carrier?

thickness???
some say that the thicker the ring gear the more chance of gear wine. i have had quiet and noisy gears from being extra thick but the 3.42 in really not that much thicker that a 3 series gear, maybe about 0.115 as compared to a 3.73 or a 4.10 at 0.225
so no it really is not a big deal running a 3 series gear on a 2 series case, just some one trying to sell you something you dont need.
