If the SSR has a 7.6 rear end, they should work.

I'm gonna bring my old Motive 3.42's along to see how the diameters, thicknesses and bolt holes line up before I pay for them as once I take them they're not returnable.

FYI. I used an Auburn posi unit removed from a 4th-Gen Camaro and installed it in a 1988 S-10 pickup rear-end. Basically, the S-10 rear-end housing is the same 10-bolt housing and 7.6" ring-gear.

So I guess you could go to a salvage yard and get a 3.73 used out of an S-10 4 banger or something and could make it work?hmm....

Yes, the S-10 gears should fit, no problem. Get the correct series gears so you don't need a spacer. But be careful with used parts and check the wear pattern. Also, look closely for fractures on the teeth.

Well the 2005 SSR 10 bolt has an 8.5" ring so I ordered an 82-90 S10 7.5" set which will be in next week.
I'll compare it with my old Motives when it comes in.
Didn't want to go with a boneyard axle.
Thanks for the help.

The Motives I have now are quiet but do make some noise coming off the pedal.
I went to the dealer and they told me they only list up to 3.42's
However the SSR pickup comes with 3.73's in a 10 bolt.
Does anyone know a part number for 3.73's or if the SSR's will fit?
I have the Zexel Torsen 3 series carrier.

Thanks in advance
I purchased an OEM GM ring and pinion set (3.73:1) from a place called West Coast Differentials. I ordered the set brand new for ~$150 + shipping when I was having my rear rebuilt. They don't have prices on their site but you can call for a quote. Couldn't find anywhere else that would sell them except for dealerships, and those that I talked to locally wanted between $450 and $700. I have not had any whine with this set, and believe me, I know serious whine out of our 10-bolts

Hope it helps!

It's a little late for me as I got my OEM 3.73 S10 gears yesterday and am having them instaled next week but thanks for the link.
If I ever need another set or the S10's don't work to my satisfaction I'll know where to go.
The local GM dealership charged me 600.00 which is a lot for most members here.
I'm sure others will be ordering their gears from West Coast Differentials especially at the 150.00 price for OEM.
My Motives don't whine but make a grrr like growling noise when floating which is a lot better than the ultra whining Stranges I had at one time but it is still annoying to me.
I'll post how the S10's turn out after they're in.
Too bad you didn't post on this thread last week.
Ah, here as in life timing is everything...

I'll call West Coast Differentials tomorrow and if they have the real OEM 3.73's in stock I'll call my GM dealer and see if I can return the S10s.
They said they were not returnable based on what I was doing with them but they're still in the box and haven't been installed so I may be able to return them possibly paying a small restocking charge.

Last time I tried to return a part to a GM dealership they wanted 30% for restocking. I just checked my old statement and my total from West Coast Differentials was $194.40 with tax and shipping to Houston back in October. Not quite an even $150 but still beats the $h!t out of $600.

~$180 (restocking charge) + ~$200 (West Coast Differentials) would still save you well over $200 for the same exact ring & pinion. Guess it just depends on how fast you need them installed. Good luck man!

I have GM 3.73 gears on my car. They are pretty quiet except for when I make a right hand turn. Apparently the installer needs to put in a small spacer in the carrier because when I make a turn, it shifts a bit and causes some slight whine. Other than that, they are pretty quiet.

Todd,

Yes, if that is happening there isn't enough pre-load on the differential carrier bearings and that can also increase ring gear back-lash. And that could cause big problems. What did you run last Friday night? I made it to the 3rd round Saturday in No-E and we have another race this Saturday (NHRA Summit Series).

Horrible. I really wasn't expecting to make any awesome runs with my street tires, but it was fun nonetheless. Congrats on making the win I need to take my rear back to the installer and have him put in the spacer but he is back in Houston so it may have to wait until summer.

The S-10 and 4th Gen F-Bodys 10-bolts are the same rear-end (7.6" ring gears, differential carrier and 10-bolt cover). Also, the 3rd Gens.

The series carrier (2 or 3) depends on the factory gear ratio. For example: factory 2.73s would be a series 2, while 3.42s and 3.73s would be a series 3 carrier. Also, it is best to use a series 3 carrier that doesn't require the ring gear spacer with 3.73s or 4/10s. IMO
