Question Gears or a Bigger Cam/ New guy to gears

Hello, i have now as you can see in my sig a Xtreme Energy 212/218 cam, im thinking strongly to go up one cam 218/224--But a buddy at work said to try gears and they would wake my car up--I really dont race just like to "play" a little around town when it me and my sons- Went to track once. In sig. -I have 3.23 gears now but i think 3.73 would be to much for what i do--Would it be worth it to go to a 3.42 gear or is there a gear slightly larger than the 3.42 or just blow this off and go with the cam. My car is an auto and i had a 2800 stall at one time and dont want another. Thanks for your help. Dwayne

well, i know capn pete will come in here and tell you to get 410s
but anyways, most people don't seem to notice a difference only jumping one gear set
and i don't believe there is anything bigger than a 3.42 and smaller than 3.73
i think if you threw in 3.73s though, you'd probably like it
i don't think you lose too much gas mileage at all (about 1-2 mpg) and it'll make it much more fun to "play" with
